the Water Oriented Recreation District might be able to remove trash from the depths of the Guadalupe River Shiner Beer Co presented a check to the WORD board under the condition that the money be used to help beautify the area around the Guadalupe River District manager Jim Inman said the board decided to use the grant money for one specific purpose It gives us an Opportunity to really go after the bottom of the Inman said The authority from the board is that the majority of the funds should be used to put divers in the river to clean the Inman said Shiner Beer contacted him about the grant in the spring Al Zator a river outfitter and member of the WORD health and sanitation committee said the grant was a shot in the arm for WORD I think it will be a good step and we will learn a Zator said We got a good handle on cleaning the surfaqjfe ajj4the through trie WORD During the summer months between May and September WORD has contracted with river outfitters to clean sections of the river from the Spring Branch area to the districts limits near Gruene Every September Friends for Rivers has an annual lower river cleanup that has eliminated thousands of pounds of trash in the river The trash in the bottom of the river such as aluminum cans clothes tires coolers tubes and garbage has accumulated during the past 20 years from tubers and rafters who have used the river With the grant in hand Zator said the committee would be able to look at what it took to clean the bottom of the Guadalupe River What we will learn is how expensive and how much money it will take and how effective it will be to clean the bottom and what sources it will take to get it he said Paul Rich WORD vice president and river outfitter said the committee still was brainstorming ideas to present to the board We are looking at avenues on how to get to the bottom of the Rich said We came up with the idea of scuba clubs and contracting it out to professional We could have different dive clubs adopt portions of the river Initially there is no way of telling how much trash there is 1 think with this grant it will enable us to find out how much trash is at the bottom and where the hot spots Shiner product director Greg Warwick said the grant because WORD was a local entity We wanted to work with someone closer to home and we wanted to donate to an organization the Shiner consumers could relate he said A lot of folks who enjoy Shiner enjoy the river and New Braunfels and come throughout the state to see the Man arrested for aggravated robbery A 20yearold New Braunfels man was arrested troubled railroad giant Union Pacific have filed a classaction lawsuit that accuses the railroad of misrepresenting its safety record and failing to disclose problems merger with Southern Pacific The lawsuit filed in federal court in Dallas contends that even as the railroad touted the benefits of the merger top railroad officials knew that combining the two rail lines would be costly It also alleges that the optimistic announcements inflated stock prices The Omaha railroad suffered an extended series of fatal accidents and severe bottlenecks that slowed shipping to a crawl while the merger unfolded the lawsuit alleges The merger also caused stock prices to tumble 20 percent since July the lawsuit claims Smith allegedly was one of those men sitting in the passenger seat of the car Smith allegedly pointed a handgun at Mates according to police reports Smith allegedly demanded the man get out of the way and threatened him with the gun said Jim Noble Comal County district attorney Drinking and driving make deadly cocktail for teens Dear Abby My husband and 1 have just observed the second anniversary of the death of our firstborn child and I have finally gathered the courage to write this letter My child the passenger was killed instantly in a horrible car accident The driver died a few hours later Both of these teenagers had been drinking The driver had a fake ID and apparently had purchased alcohol for both of them The autopsy report on my child came back as legally intoxicated My husband and I did everything we could to warn our child about the dangers of alcohol and other drugs Our words fell on deaf ears despite all our pleas and warnings Even after two years its still difficult to allow our surviving teen ager the freedom to go out at night That wreck is always in the back of our minds Though this child is dependable and responsible we live in fear of the deadly driving of another drunken teen who thinks the only way to have fun is to illegally purchase alcohol and other drugs Since the world is still reeling from the shock of the senseless death of the Princess of Wales perhaps its a good time for those who admired her to stop and think before getting behind the wheel of a car after theyve been drinking I realize the problems of driving while intoxicated are not limited to teenagers and young adults Everyone regardless of age needsto be made aware of this horrible problem so common in our society today Parents and teachers please show this letter to the young people you care about It might cause some kids to wake up before its too late Grieving Mom in Texas Dear Grieving Mom I offer my deepest sympathy on the tragic loss of ypur firstborn With the holidays rapidly approaching I hope your letter will serve as a cautionary reminder about the dangers of driving under the Influence of alcohol drugs Although for years parents have hammered home the message Dont drive If youve been they should also emphasize that when passengers are intoxicated they cannot reliably judge the sobriety of the driver t Dear Abby My two children ages 8 and 11 each have chores to do after every meal such as clearing the table or putting the dishes in the dishwasher When the children have friends over however they dont have to do their chores Is it OK to make them And if so should they be able to ask their guests to help Unsure Mom Marine on Saint Croix Minn Dear Mom Every family has its own approach to children and chores Its up to you to determine what works best for you and then enforce it If the children arc responsible about performing their duties an occasional night off when special friends visit could be a simple way of rewarding them If you require that they do their chores even when they have company their friends should not be expected to assist them unless they volunteer to do so Dear Abby Although Ive never written to you before 1 have what I think is a valuable tip for the young mother whose child threw a temper tantrum in a department store She was alarmed that no one tried to stop her as she carried the screaming child from the I taught both my children that if a stranger grabs them theyre to yell Put me down Youre not my daddy or Hopefully this would arouse more attention than simply yelling would 1 hope this is helpful not only to the woman who wrote you but to other parents as well Protective Mom in Texas Dear Protective Mom I appreciate your valuable suggestion Thank you for submitting it Hussein lifts ban on weapons inspectors BAGHDAD Iraq AP Saddam Hussein
