photo by Michael Darnall Taylor Ford uses the Landa Park volleyball court as her personal huge sand box Tuesday afternoon Moms foresight prevents injury in hindsight Dear Abby Something happened yesterday that makes me want to stress the importance of bicycle helmets even on toddlers who ride little rideon toys My 2yearold daughter and 4 yearold son were riding their bikes on our sidewalk when my son accidentally bumped into the back of his sisters bike The bike slid out from under her and she fell backward hitting her head on the concrete Fortunately she was wearing a helmet and was not injured but I shudder to think what might have happened had she not been wearing one I hope this letter will make parents think twice before letting their children regardless of age ride without a helmet Virginia Briggs Levittown Pa Dear Virginia You are a wise and conscientious mother for realizing that an innocent bike ride can be dangerous for children who arent wearing bicycle helmets Helmets can prevent an estimated 85 percent of serious head injuries and greatly reduce the risk of severe brain injury that can result in death However even a minor brain injury can lead to problems with learning and memory There are many good helmets on the market today The easiest way to find one that is well made and reliable is to look for the SNELL certification sticker Helmet models carrying that decal have met rigorous standards in tests performed by the Snell Foundation Based on three decades of research in the United States and England a Sncllcertifled helmet is one of the best Bicycle helmets save lives Theres no better reason to insist that your child wears one P S Helmets are also essential safety gear for other sports such as inline skating etc Recently Moved Getting Married New Baby Give us a call Trout From Page 1A Market 306 and Rio Raft Company and Camp Beans both on River Road TPWD planned to stock trout and from the Water Oriented Recreation District would enable TPWD to stock an additional trout Magnolia said Hylmar Karbach of Guadalupe River Trout Unlimited said his organization would spend on four stockings between November and first part of February About trout will be stocked by Trout Unlimited The trout would range from pound to 3 pounds We expect to have about 450 Trout Unlimited members fishing along the river and they will be from Houston Dallas Austin San Antonio and the valley and all points in Karbach said Junes near record floods and release rates as high as cubic feet per second affected the trouts river habitats Magnelia said In order for trout to survive in the water Guadalupe River temperatures needed to be 71 degrees and below he added The release rates from Canyon Dam this summer raised the temperature by 10 degrees Usually you have a warm upper and a cold lower layer in Canyon he said The trouble is with all the movement of water coming through the lake it mixed those layers Coming up from the dam it is about 65 degrees in a normal year This year it was about 75 As a result Magnelia said he and other biologists this year found only one fish near the dam as compared to in the same spot in 1996 Magnelia said TPWD would stock fish in the 8to 12 inch range and that Guadalupe Trout Unlimited will be stocking trout in the 18inch size Under new trout fishing regulations that took effect in September fishermen are allowed to harvest any rainbow or brown trout measuring 18 inches one daily bag limit from the second crossing on River Road to Whitewater Sports The trout may not be harvested or retained if taken by any method except artificial lures TPWD will continue to stock 3to 6inch trout in the river in May or June of each year to bolster the fish population so that TPWDs desire for a trout fishery on the Guadalupe River could be realized Magnelia said Jessie Crenshaw manager for the Rio Raft Company near Sattler said trout season would soon pick up for the winter There are some holes down here where people are catching them because they stock them on the Crenshaw said On one weekend I counted 14 fishermen on Saturday and Sunday and when the weather turned cool they started coming ULTRA DENSE LUXURIOUS SHAW CARPET WAS 22SO SALE S695 SQ YD NO TRIP CHARGES WITH THIS AD 7100 Blanco JVsCT loop4io 8008800246 Happy haunters enjoy a host of choices Haunted Haus New Braunfels
