Business hall of fame inducts 6 HOUSTON — Six Texas business leaders who have helped strengthen the Texas economy and shaped the face of its success have been selected for induction into the Texas Business Hall of Fame by the Texas Business Hall of Fame Foundation’s board of directors. The Texas Business Hall of Fame recognizes members of the state’s business community who have made outstanding contributions in their field and raises funds to support students of MBA programs throughout the state. The six leaders will be honored and officially inducted at the foundation’s annual awards dinner Thursday at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston. The dinner also will award $5,000 scholarships to 25 business graduate students at Texas colleges and universities. Inductees are: ■ The late J. S. Abercrombie, an oil field equipment innovator, founding chairman of Cameron Iron Works and co-founder of Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston. His daughter, Josephine Abercrombie, will represent him. ■ Lamar Hunt, founder and chairman of the board of Unity Hunt Inc. of Dallas and an original organizer of the American Football League. ■ Kenneth L. Lay, chairman and CEO of Enron Corp. of Houston, one of the world’s largest energy companies. ■ Robert C. McNair, Sr., founder and CEO of Cogen Technologies Energy Group, the largest cogeneration/independent power company in the United States. ■ Fayez Sarofim of Fayez Sarofim and Co. of Houston, CEO of one of the largest and oldest privately owned investment counseling firms in die United States. ■ Edward E. Whitacre, Jr., chairman and CEO of SBC Communications of San Antonio, one of the world's leading diversified telecommunications companies. The Texas Business Hall of Fame Foundation is a nonprofit organization of IOO directors who are business leaders from cities throughout die state. For the past 15 years, the foundation has recognized exceptional achievement in business by inducting Texas business legends into the Texas Business Hall of Fame. TXI reorganizes, announces new positions A recent reorganization resulted in a number of changes at Texas Industries, Inc., 7781 Farm-to-Market 1102, New Braunfels. Jerry Smith was promoted to manager of storerooms and raw materials. He will have responsibilities at the cement plants in Hunter and Midlothian. Smith began his TXI career in 1973 at the Artesia, Miss., plant. He later was promoted to quarry foreman at the Midlothian Plant and transferred to the Hunter operation in 1979. Jack Hood was promoted to production manager of the Hunter plant and will be responsible for all areas of production. He has been at TXI since 1980. His previous positions included quality control chemist, process control technician, process supervisor and pyroprocess supervisor. Gene Pettey has been promoted to operations manager of the Hunter plant. His areas of responsibility include mechanical electrical maintenance, production and engineering. Pettey moved to San Marcos to accept the position of pyroprocess supervisor at the Hunter plant in 1980. Prior to his recent promotion, he was the production manager. David Sansing was promoted to financial administrative manager with responsibilities at both Midlothian and Hunter plants. Sansing began his TXI career in 1986 as a senior staff accountant at the corporate office in Dallas. He uinsferred to the Hunter operation in 1989 as financial manager. He will be responsible for all accounting and credit functions at Hunter, Midlothian, Beaumont and Katy. Shelton receives award nomination Dr. Carroll Shelton has received the River District Dental Society’s nomination for the 1997 Dentist of the Year Award, the most prestigious award for Texas dentists. The award is sponsored by the Texas Academy of Or. Carmi Shelton General Dentistry. The winner was to be announced during a special ceremony honoring nominees on Sept. 27 during the Texas AGD’s annual Lone Star Dental Conference in Austin. The Texas Academy of General Dentistry is the second largest dental organization in Texas.
