New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - October 8, 1997, New Braunfels, Texas HeraldZettung g Wednesday October Practicing musicians rock neighbors peace and quiet Dear Abby We are a group of neighbors who have lived in this area for 40 years or more Some of us work nights and sleep days This have always been a quiet well tended area until recently A new family with young adult children moved into our neighborhood One of them wants to be a drummer and practices constantly To be honest he has no talent On weekends his friends practice with him They are just as bad One of them thinks hes a singer Ive heard mating cats that sounded better Between this would be drummer the truly bad singer and the loud amps our weekends have Hummel become nightmares Its not that we dont like modern music Our son plays the drum with a group our nephew plays keyboards and sings with a professional group We have dsked them to tone it down or to simply give us a break now and then You cant believe the rude answers we have received At one point I was told that I could always move Recently one of the neighbors was injured at work and suffered a heart attack during surgery His dottor ordered complete bed rest and no stress Because of the noise this is impossible The parents of the drummer refuse to acknowledge that there is a problem Other than committing mayhem what can we do to restore peace and quiet Please advise before someone loses control Desperate Neighbors in L A Dear Desperate Since the parents of the young musician have refused to meet you halfway you must consider other options Investing in earplugs might bring some relief and sound proofing your homes could be another option Also consider soundabsorbing drapes with acoustical lining doubleglazed windows or storm windows upholstered walls and wood paneling with insulation between the paneling and walls Most cities have noise ordinances Show a copy of the ordinance to your neighbors Noise can be measured with a device called a decibel which is available in some electronics stores or through specialty If the noise violates the noise restrictions in your neighborhood as a last resort the courts may be able to provide a solution to your problem ltnpuvision Internet Pastiest Modem Charges iiijiliiiMow And Get Your 2 Weeks 6080808 mJjB From Page 1 Schaeffer said she wanted to have more volunteers working for the museum Currently the Hummel Museum has a staff of four and has about 50 volunteers I am going to have a volunteer meeting on Oct Schaeffer said One of the volunteers will call the persons and invite them They will ask the volunteers to bring a Purdum said the museum directors decided to hire a new executive director because they couldnt do without one We decided to rearrange the budget to do the things we wanted such as the security her Schaeffers salary and bite the bullet and give her money to hire secretarial Purdum said with the new secretarial help Schaeffer would free her to promote the museum j More exposure for the museum is needed now than ever before Purdum said because Sister Hummels art work and figurines are growing in popularity worldwide He said the International Hummel Collectors Club had members and a Hummel traveling exhibit showing in a Pennsylvania museum had been well received We get half of our attendance from out of Purdum said We got a new member from Pennsylvania after they attended the art exhibit Cable From Page 1 Cable rates are not easily explained Moore said A lengthy formula influenced by inflation changes in local programming FCC regulatory rates and other factors Arraigned determine cable rates for towns and cities Currently basic cable service in New Braunfels sells for per month and includes 14 channels Expanded basic service includes 23 channels and costs per month according to TCI channel listings for New Braunfels By contrast San Marcos residents also served by TCI receive basic service for and expanded basic service for per month said Moore A profound difference is that expanded basic cable service in San Marcos includes 20 additional channels and San Marcos residents pay almost a dollar less per month than New Braunfels customers according to information obtained from TCI I hough you are no longer here with us on your birthday the more that Santiaga Aguirre day saddens us for we so much miss you 19311989 joy and happiness you brought us was taken away to soon by our Heavenly Father yet we still feel your presence with us e pray that you are at peace and that one day we will all be reunited as a family again HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM Octobers 1997 Love Ross and Jo From Page 1 Waldrip said it was not unusual that Ramsay entered a plea on behalfof Carney He said defendants are presumed to be not guilty so Ramsay just formalized that During the arraignment hearing Ramsay also denied Carneys request for a hearing to dismiss the charges The arrest warrant was issued in connection with a lawsuit filed by the attorney general against 25 members of the organization The suit alleges that the Republic of Texas group filed illegal liens against the state of Texas Carneys motion contended that theattorney general acted outside his Teens authority when he filed the suit She also charged that the officer at whom she allegedly pointed a gun and the assistant district attorney who took the case to the grand jury acted without authority because they had not filed a statement of oath of office with the Secretary of States office Waldrip said without researching the motion and case law it was difficult to comment on Carneys accusations However he said it did not seem to be outside individuals authority The problem is its real hard to tell exactly what their complaint he said John Riegler supervisor in the statutory documents section of the secretary of states office said the Texas Constitution establishes an oath of office In addition it requires elected officials the secretary of state and appointed state officials to file the oath Riegler said it was not clear whether the requirement would include peace officers and assistant district attorneys Its up to the courts to decide who does he said I guess it would depend on what you have and how you argue Waldrip said the case has now been set for a pretrial hearing and at this point it is impossible to say when the case might go to trial Carney said in the mean time she would continue working on her defense CANT KEEP UP WE CAN HELP Child Support Medical Bills Past Due Auto Loans Back House Payments Back Taxes Credit Card to more than 400 Barrington said evidence of a growing number of youths in need of help More people are in tune to us Teen Connection and what we said Barrington but there are more people moving into the community and bringing more social problems with The increase in abuse of children and teens in New Braunfels can be partially attributed to a rise in countywide population and increased awareness of services available but family abuse problems are occurring more frequently These are verifiable said Barrington The problem is Control issues such as loss of control over a child can cause parents to become frustrated and erupt into violence according to Peter Olsen Texas Education Foundation counselor for Job Corps Domestic abuse occurs between parents and kids because they care about each other said Olsen But just because a parent says I love you does not mean he or she cannot and will not hurt the child It has been my observation that you hurt the ones you love the said Olsen The Texas Family Code defines family violence as an act by a member of a family or household against another member that is intended to result in physical harm bodily injury assault or a threat that reasonably places the member in fear of imminent physical harm The law excludes the reasonable discipline of a child and defines abuse as physical injury that results in substantial harm or genuine threat sexual con or conduct or encouraging the child to engage in sexual conduct New Braunfels police officer Martin Mayer has been dispatched to several domestic abuse calls during his 18 years of service He said children and teens were often pawns in a game between the parents who used the children in a manipulative fashion to get back at each other Other familiar scenarios include a teen usually a son trying to protect his mother from abuse by her husband or boyfriend Violence is usually perpetrated against the woman and the teen he said People think family violence is a female being abused by her said Mayer but almost without exception the kids are in the middle of it Young adults and children who are in need of immediate help or have questions about family violence can call the
