New Braunfels Navy veteran Carl Lavin submitted his memories of working aboard Old 1 remember when Old Iron Sides came to Corpus Christi Texas in the early 1930s Our Sea Scouts of the ship Atbofa went to Corpus to help visitors who came aboard Our main adult leader was Cap Keith Gordon retired British Commander of the Royal Navy One of the first things Capt Gordon called to our attention as we approached the ship was the rigging lines were right stranded lines ropes to instead of left stranded lines as on the original ship The ship was to have been sailed down the coast to Corpus but we were told not enough sailors familiar with square riggers were available so it was towed Capt Gordon was a very interesting person He had built a model of Old Ironsides making guns that would actually fire small pellets etc lie gave the model to the museum in Brackenridge Park for a temporary display but later took it and sent it to England saying the public did not appreciate it He told us tales of when he sailed the seas and the British flag was respected all they had to tell a Slave Runner or Pirate Ship To surrender in the kings and they would do so All this was quite a wonderful experience for us young teenagers Reading about Old Ironsides in the San Antonio paper recently brought these memories back to Mary O Von Stein has completed a Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps
