New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - August 17, 1997, New Braunfels, Texas HeraldZeitung a Sunday August 5A to up AOLU Eoitot Well the ACLU is at it again Rushing in with their help for anything or anybody anti Christian I would like to ask all the good Christians in New Braunfels if they are to continue their apathy and let the ACLU ahd people like David Gonzalez take away alt of our Christian rights David Gonzalez deliberately wore that T shirt to offend me and all Christians If I had been there Im sure I would have confronted him there by causing an immediate breach of quoting from your article on page one Aug 7 1997 Continuing quote said and making an offensive gesture or display to Mr Gonzalezs Tshirt an offensive display to any good Christian and he therefore was guilty of inciting a breach of peace I would like to ask the ACLU if they will defend me in an action against David Gonzalez He certainly has offended my deeply religious feefings or do they just defend antireligious acts Please all you good Christians show your support for the business that had the courage to have this person arrested before something serious had happened Write to the ACLU Jay Jacobson Executive Director of ACLU in Austin Carmelita Horan New Braunfels NB city manager one of the test Editor The citizens of New Braunfels should be aware that our city manager Mike Sharids is Write em one of the best city managers we could have I worked with Mike Shands on the Zoning Board of Adjustments and on the Planning and Zoning Commission when he was our Planning Director My admiration for him grew as he became our city manager He was such a breath of fresh air for our city This man is honest and he truly cares about our citizens all of How many people do you know that would be in his position and not want a contract He doesnt and for that I respect him as we will never have the problems we had with the former manager It cost us big bucks when he left Mike Shands deserves our gratitude and appreciation for a job well done and I hope he will remain here for many years to come Myrtle Clark New Braunfels Cal Thomas is right on target Editor I read with interest Cal Thomas column of July 3 1997 captioned Is it racism or something else Interesting question to ponder Thomas also stated So why is the president making a bigger deal about racism during the next 12 months than about fatherless children especially among minorities Is it racism or something else that has contributed to the disproportionate number of blacks in prison Is it racism or something else that has found a relationship between singleparent households and rates of violent crime and burglary among people between the ages of 12 and 20 Everyone faces obstacles in life Some overcome Others elect victimhood and sing about I think you are right on target Cal In the 1960s I was emptdyed as a nurse in Los Angeles Calif there was a great deal of violence among both blacks and whites I am still very angry about all the police officers that died because they chose to wear a uniform so that others could feel safer Sad In fact during the original 1964 Watts Riots LAPD Chief William Parker was a patient at Queen of Angels Hospital Some lovely gentleman called to inform me We are goingio kill the police chief tonight and if you get in the way you can go Anyway I got a wheelchair and enough people to surround it I also put the wig I was wearing on him What a sense of humor he had It is not the job of police officers social workers or even teachers to raise the children of America It is the job of the parents People like Jesse Jackson Maxine Waters and Louis Farrakhan only encourage selfpity and loss of individualism Betty J Moore Canyon Lake Sports editors gun comments off the wall Editor I was appalled by the article of Aug 6 on page IB Erickson on the subject of guns in our homes Certainly his comments about Barry jSwitzer were appropriate What more can you expect from a coach with his reputation But his comments about guns in our homes are off the wall Has he ever heard of hunting Where is a hunter supposed to keep his guns if not in the home If guns are not allowed in the home this would in effect eliminate the sport of hunting He admits he knows little about guns and has had almost no experience witfi them This is apparent from his article He comments that Switzer presumably lives in a safe neighborhood and asks who is he protecting himself from criminals and crazies of how many guns does he own a sporthunter might have several a rifle for deer or big game hunting a shotgun for bird hunting and whether they are registered Im not aware of a law that requires registration of In any event I would suggest that Mr Erickson confine his articles to subjects that he knows something about or at least that he adequately researches before publication Eugene J Tschoepe New Braunfels Qtms H you dont know what youre doing stay away With all due respect to Mr Tom Erickson reference his article in your issue of Aug 6 1997 may I point some misinformation he wrote that severely needs addressing The article refers to Coach Barry Switzer being arrested for carrying a firearm into the secured area of an airport Mr Erickson states also about the dangerous nature of firearms and as he stated later in his article that he didnt have very much training with firearms May I point out that more people are killed each year in motor vehicle accidents than firearm accidents A weapon loaded and cocked then placed on a table will not discharge until someone pulls the trigger Firearms are just like snakes if you dont know what youre doing stay away from them Then if you want to handle a firearm youll need training from a competent instructor Mr Erickson more than once also states that the weapon was not registered Firearms are not required by Texas law to be registered If a firearm is bought from a Federal Firearms Dealer then that information is on file Mr Erickson also asks Who is he protecting himself from How many other guns does he own and are they registered These questions appear to be a bit nosy and if Erickson asked me the same question Id probably tell him it wasnt any of his business Im not really interested in how many cars or suits he owns Mr Erickson also states that Jerry Jones needs to punish Switzer in some form either by a suspension or fine or both For your information Mr Erickson carrying a firearm into a secured area of an airport is punishable by a fine of 10 years in the penitentiary Please leave the dispensing of justice to the pros Also Mr Erickson state law prohibits making a firearm accessible to a child According to DPS instructors firearms related deaths concerning children have fallen in Texas Losing one child is one too many So NRA uses the Eddie Eagle program to teach firearms safety to children by saying that if you see a firearm stop dont touch leave the area tell an adult Education is the key to reducing firearms deaths and not by negative statements as you have done sir Mr Erickson I teach the Concealed Handgun course and I will extend to you as I have to some other reporters at your paper you are welcome to contact me and I will let you sit in on one of my classes to completion so we can all get firearms safety out to the public and maybe save some lives Carl L Davis Mission Hill
