New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - July 18, 1997, New Braunfels, Texas '-JST* Herald-Zeitung □ Friday .July 18, 1997 □ 7AReligion in the national news to allow ffomolo prfostt * FORT WORTH, Texas (AP) — Episcopal Bishop Jack Iker, who opposes the ordination of women, has worked out a compromise to allow female priests to serve in the 23-county Fort Worth* diocese for the first time. Iker announced his decision a week before the Episcopal General Convention, which convenes Friday in Philadelphia. A vote is scheduled at the convention that would formalize a 1995 decision requiring all dioceses to accept female priests. The Fort Worth compromise would put women priests under the authority of Dallas Episcopal Bishop James Stanton, who favors ordination of women. Although the Episcopal Church formally approved female priests in J 976, a Conscience clause** has allowed bishops to refuse to ordain women. Of more than IOO U.S. dioceses, only four, including Fort Worth, refuse to ordain or allow ministry of female priests; The others are in Eau Claire, Wis., Fresno, Calif., and Peoria, III. to Mock dteplay of (AP) Three Charleston residents have filed a lawsuit to block the county council from posting the Ten Commandments in its chambers, saying it would violate the First Amendment guarantee of freedom of religion. In a similar flap recently in Alabama, a judge refused to remove a display of the commandments from his courtroom, defying the state Supreme Court, which ruled it unconstitutional. Alabama Gov. Fob James has threatened to call out the National Guard and the state police if anyone tries to remove the plaque. South Carolina Gov. David Beasley, who has a copy of the Ten Commandments outside his office door, has praised James* action. The Charleston County council recently voted 9-0 to use private contributions to post the commandments. One of the three plaintiffs who filed the lawsuit in Charleston on Monday was Armand Derfner, a local attorney who successfully challenged the state’s requirement that public officials believe in a supreme being. The lawsuit alleges that posting the commandments constitutes unlawful endorsement of*religion because they call for worshiping one deity and respecting the Sabbath and prohibit taking the Lord’s name in vain.Jimmy Carter’s church enjoys full paws after troubled start PLAINS, Ga. (AP) — Maranatha Baptist Church, which had a controversial birth 20 years ago, celebrated its anniversary with a full house. •The church was formed after Plains Baptist Church refused membership to civil rights activist Clennon King in 1976. A handful of church members unhappy with that decision broke ranks and formed Maranatha. Its pews are full these days, thanks in part to the visitors who come to see its most famous member and Sunday school teacher, former President Carter. “It has been God’s blessing, I think, to have so many people come from around the world to worship with us,” Carter said as the 300-seat church celebrated its 20th anniversary with 350 visitors. “It’s a church that I would say is characterized by hospitality,” he said. “We welcome anyone who comes, and we have a very special ministry because of that.” I rn- 661 South Walnut 608-0017 John B.
