New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - July 11, 1997, New Braunfels, Texas HeraldZeituna n Fridav Julv 1119Q7 n 7A Cincinnati woman begins year as moderator of Presbyterian Church New church leader aims to bring blacks into church By TERRY KINNEY Associated Press Writer CINCINNATI AP Patricia Brown is the new moderator for the Presbyterian Church but shes far from new to the church I like to tell the story of my grandmothers grandmother who went to church with the people who owned her she was a slave in Mrs Brown said recently They had to cross the bay a two day trip and they took their maid niy grandmothers grandmother Thats how we became Mrs Brown 52 a former medical and clinical isocial worker was elected moderator of the member church at its convention last weekln Syracuse Mrs Browns mother and grandmother also were active in the church I spent a great deal of time with my Mrs Brown said Evangelism education and empowerment those are Browns three Patricia Brown moderator of the Presbyterian Church USA She said If youre going to be a member you have to take care of the In 1992 she became the first black woman elected moderator of the Cincinnati Presbytery which oversees 86 churches in southwest Ohio northern Kentucky and southern Indiana She is the third black woman to be moderator of the national church I love the way the Presbyterian Church she said Its having something to do with how things work out and what matters thats really fulfilling And Id like for more people to know the Mrs Brown hopes to advance the churchs goal of increasing minority membership The Presbyterian Church has always been known as a white she said I challenged the General Assembly to increase its commitment to increasing minority membership I plan to be very visible to those groups Evangelism education and empowerment those are Browns three Es Im looking at evangelism in a 21st century way its a matter of public relations and The Presbyterian Church is losing about members a year We are an old church and we are heavily invested in the older cities and the older parts of the cities of America and thats where the demographic upheaval has said the Rev John Buchanan who preceded Mrs Brown as moderator The church has pledged to increase its minority membership to 20 percent by 2010 There are a lot of thinking racial minorities that would really thrive in the Presbyterian Mrs Brown said There are also people in lower socioeconomic communities that can be empowered by the Buchanan urged Mrs Brown to marshal her energy since a moderator can be on the road 300 days covering miles during a oneyear term My advice for her would be to take care of herself take a little bit of time to reflect on what shes seeing the year comes on you fast and Buchanan said And I would encourage her to pursue that particular diversity goal for all shes 651 South Walnut 6080017 John B Moczygemba Qeneral Dentistry 6254515 162
