New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - July 11, 1997, New Braunfels, Texas Herald-Zeitung g Friday .July 11,1997 g 7ACincinnati woman begins year as moderator of Presbyterian Church ‘Evangelism, education and empowerment — those are Brown’s three E’s.’ — Patricia Brown _moderator    of    the    Presbyterian Church (USA) New church leader aims to bring blacks into churchBy TERRY KINNEYAssociated Press Writer CINCINNATI (AP) — Patricia Brown is the new moderator for the Presbyterian Church (USA), but she’s far from new to the church. “I like to tell the story of my grandmother’s grandmother, who went to church with the people who owned her — she was a slave in Maryland,” Mrs. Brown said recently. They had to cross the bay, a two-day trip, and they took their maid, my grandmother’s grandmother. That’s how we became Presbyterians.” Mrs. Brown, 52, a former medical and clinical social worker, was elected moderktor of the 2.7-million member church at its convention last week In Syracuse, N.Y. Mrs. Brown’s mother and grandmother also were active in the church. “I spent a great deal of time with my grandmother,” Mrs. Brown said. ‘‘She said, ‘If you’re going to be a member, you have to take care of the church.”’ In 1992, she became the first black woman elected moderator of the Cincinnati Presbytery, which oversees 86 churches in southwest Ohio, northern Kentucky and southern Indiana. She is die third black woman to be moderator of the national church. “I love the way the Presbyterian Church works,” she said. “It’s having something to do with how things work out and what matters that’s really fulfilling. And I’d like for more people to know the secret.” Mrs. Brown hopes to advance the church’s goal of increasing minority membership. “The Presbyterian Church has always been known as a white church,” she said. “I challenged the General Assembly to increase its commitment to increasing minority membership. I plan to be very-visible to those groups. “Evangelism, education and empowerment — those are Brown’s three E’s. I’m looking at evangelism in a 21st century way fit’s a matter of public relations and marketing.” The Presbyterian Church is losing about 35,000 members a year. “We are an old church and we are heavily invested in the older cities and the older parts of the cities of America, and that’s where the demographic upheaval has occurred,” said the Rev. John Buchanan, who preceded Mrs. Brown as moderator. The church has pledged to increase its minority membership to 20 percent by 2010. “There are a lot of thinking racial minorities that would really thrive in the Presbyterian Church,” Mrs. Brown said. “There are also people in lower socioeconomic communities that can be empowered by the church.” Buchanan urged Mrs. Brown to marshal her energy, since a moderator can be on the road 300 days, covering 500,000 miles during a one-year term. “My advice for her would be to take care of herself, take a little bit of time to reflect on what she’s seeing — the year comes on you fast and furious,” Buchanan said. “And I would encourage her to pursue that particular (diversity) goal for all she’s worth.” 651 South Walnut 608-0017 John B.
