New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - July 11, 1997, New Braunfels, Texas 6A n HeraldZeitOhg O Friday July Church Life To talk with News Editor Sue England about Church Life call 6259144 ext 221 Church Life When life is beyond repair its time to call the Master Craftsman The last coat of lacquer went on without a hitch All that was left was to glue a small section of loose veneer and then send the old rocker made new to be upholstered t was beautiful already I cant wait to see it when it is completely finished The first time 1 saw it was almost 20 years ago It was sitting in a trash pile south of Houston on one of those long steamy nights so typical of the Texas coast Jan was very pregnant and we were very broke so when 1 saw it I immediately pulled over After all we were going to have a baby and needed a rocker and this one was definitely in our price range For weeks I carefully restored the old rocker with patience and diligence It was not a matter of refinishing mind you This was a need for restoration Abandoned and at the end of usefulness the rocker Dennis Gallaher was restored to its original beauty It lasted through more than 10 years of heavy use Two babies were rocked to sleep night after night Many friends sat and talked about life in the junk pile chair now an envied antique But time and too many moves took a toll Eight years ago the rocker was moved to the shop to be fixed and finally to storage for lack of time and patience What had been restored and lovingly used was once again a broken down piece of old furniture Until two months ago Carefully and lovingly I restored it again The brokenness has been repaired and the useless is once again useful Gordon MacDonald said this The fact is almost every one of us will encounter some issue that introduces us to brokenness at a far greater intensity than we ever thought possible Broken worlds are a significant part of living we must be vigilant enough to avoid the avoidable but prepared and disciplined enough to persevere when facing the unexpected or the I have a knack for restoration 1 look behind the brokenness and filth of furniture and people and see a better day on the horizon I was not so prepared when my own world broke though What does the healer do when he is the one in need of healing Maybe you find yourself in the same place Maybe you are the one who has always been in charge the one to whom everyone else came when they had problems Maybe you are the mom and dad who took care of life and found your fulfillment in keeping it all together for everyone else Maybe you are the one who cared for the sick neighbor or relative or spouse and found your satisfaction in restoring other peoples broken worlds Or maybe youre like me The guy with all the answers Confident secure in the future in control of life and loving it all the more And then brokenness arrives and what life was supposed to be ends abruptly and with pain What life was planned to be is no more and those who promised to be there through thick and thin are gone What are you going to do now Cherubim and seraphim Carrie Chaney daughter of Van and Marjorie Chaney of New a significant part of What you do with your broken world will determine the quality of life you will have It is God who speaks through the prophet Hosea about restoring broken worlds will her into the wilderness I will give her vineyards from And the Valley of Trouble will be a door of hope I do not know why our worlds break but this I do know God is always lovingly involved in the desire to restore Whether our world breaks because of others or our own foolish choices Gods desire is to give us vineyards in the desert and show us the door of hope in the dark valleys of hopeless living Are you in the Valley of Trouble Oswald Chambers said God puts us through the discipline of darkness to teach us to heed Him Song birds are taught to sing in the dark and we are put into the shadow of Gods hand until we learn to hear Him When you are in the dark listen and God will give you a very precious message for someone else when you get into the And just like my old rocker the restoration that He works will be admired by all Only a few will know what it took to be put back together No one will fully understand the painful steps of restored living that you experience But God does Because He is there with you And He is the Master Restorer Dennis Gallaher is pastor of the Freedom Fellowship Church in New Where it falls there it shall tie Have you ever moved I mean really moved I think Im sort of an expert on the subject since I have moved both interstate and intracity This is not something for which I am proud I simply offer this to give credibility to the story I am about to tell A few weeks ago some friends and I helped a family move across town I sympathize with anyone who must go through the process of loading and unloading boxes furniture and other items that dont seem to have a convenient way to get from one place to another As the morning passed we were unloading the contents of the truck into the new residence and lo and behold there was a waterbed Now I own three of the things and let me be the first to say that tearing down and setting up a waterbed ranks right up there with getting an enema I really felt sorry for these people now As we carried in the frame I jokingly quoted the verse from Ecclesiates which says In the place where the tree falls there it shall My attempt at humor was designed to highlight the fact that once you decide where the waterbed goes there it shall stay You cant change your mind after the frame is down and the waters in the mattress My friends and I returned to the truck to get another load of whatever we could carry One of these men said to me Tim you have a Bible verse for everything While I was flattered by such a comment I retorted to him that it just goes to show how incredibly relevant and practical the Bible is This kind of incident is not uncommon for people who read the Listen to Me O My servant Israel O My chosen ones The Lord Who made you Who will help you says O servant of Mine dont be afraid O Jerusalem My chosen ones dont be afraid For 1 will pour out water on the thirsty land and streams on the dry ground I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring and My blessing on your descendants and they will spring up among the like poplars by streams of Oh that you had listened to My laws Then you would have had peace flowing like a gentle river and great waves of righteousness Yet even now be free from your captivity Leave Babylon singing as you go shout to the ends of the earth that the Lord has redeemed His servants the Jews They were not thirsty when He led them through the deserts He divided the rock and water gushed out for them to drink But there is no says the Lord for the And now the Lord says Who formed Me from the womb to be His Servant to bring Jacob back to Him so that Israel is gathered to Him for I shall be glorious in the eyes of the Lord and My God shall be My indeed He says It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob and to restore the preserved ones of Israel I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles that You shocrtchbe My salvation to the ends of the Thus says the Lord the Redeemer of Israel their Holy One to Him Whom man despises to Him Whom the nation abhors to the Servant of rulers Kings shall see and arise princes also shall worship because of the Lord Who is faithful the Holy One of Israel and He has chosen Thus says the Lord In an acceptable time 1 have heard You and in the day of salvation I have helped You 1 will preserve You and give You as a covenant to the people to restore the earth to cause them to inherit the desolate heritages that You may say to the prisoners Go to those who are in darkness Show They shall neither hunger nor thirst the searing sun and scorching desert winds will not reach them any more For the Lord in His mercy will lead them beside the cool Taken from Isaiah 49 The Living Bible The New American Standard and The New King West Virginia farmer set to lead downtownBulyerde Texas Bible People want to accuse me of knowing the Bible because I have a Tim Jydkins seminary education I guess they feel that if they couldve gone to seminary they would know how to read the Bible for themselves I eagerly answer this charge by declaring that while seminary taught me many things about the ministerial profession it lent very little to my practical application of the Bible to my life I did not have one professor who told me that when moving waterbeds Ecclesiates is the verse to know The point of this article is clear and simple All people can read and understand the Bible or at least most of it I allow some exception for The truly outstanding thing is that the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit in the believer allows for consistent and practical application to any and all Scripture since it is He who inspired its contents 1 gain personal instruction and inspiration as I regularly put the Bible in front of my eyes and READ It is amazing how regularly this happens Give it a try for yourself Ill go out on a limb with my Bible of course to guarantee that you will draw life from the Bible as you read it with sincerity and
