New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - June 13, 1997, New Braunfels, Texas Herald-Zeitung Q Friday, June 13,1997 g 3A Open adoption records mean tasting bitter with sweet DEAR ABBY: In all the articles I’ve seen in recent months concerning opening all adoption records, I have never read about the responsibilities of those who wish to find each other. I have only one question: Are you willing to totally accept whatever you find, and to accept that entire extended family as your own? ; Are you willing to include that family, likable or not, in your family Celebrations and go to theirs on a regular basis? If your newfound family is in financial need, requires surgery, psychiatric care or a nursing home, are you willing to pay for their care for the rest of your life? Will you visit them — at their country estate or exclusive country club, or perhaps in a homeless shelter, drug/alcohol treatment center or jail? If you can’t accept all the responsibilities of the whole package, don’t open the box! I have no memory of being told I was adopted. I have always known, since “adopted” was a happy word used from the time I was an infant. To my birth mother, I would simply say: “Thank you for not aborting me, for caring enough to give me up to a loving family. I hope you had other children and your life was as full of love as mine.” I’M NOT LOST, PLEASE DON’T FIND ME, GLENVIEW, ILL. DEAR NOT LOST: You have written a very intelligent letter. Although I have heard from many adoptees and birth mothers about their desire to locate their lost relatives, I have seen no statistics regarding how many regretted making contact. DEAR ABBY: Is it just me, or do you and your readers find exposed bra straps disgusting? I notice it is very common to wear tank tops or sundresses or some other top that exposes all or part of the shoulder with the bra strap fully exposed. I do not find this appealing at all. It’s up there with wearing curlers in public. I am 43, and for the past 30 years, I’ve worn shoulder-baring tops. When I do, I don’t wear a bra, and in the ‘70s and ‘80s this was the norm. (I don’t recall women showing anything that should not have been shown when they went braless.) If the top is so revealing without a bra, it probably is too revealing with one. Of course, there are strapless bras for women who feel uncomfortable without a bra, and manufacturers could help out by sewing bra cups into tops that bare shoulders. What do you and your readers think about exposed bra straps? SALLY B. IN VALENCIA, CALIF. DEAR SALLY: When it comes to exposed bra straps, I’m inclined to suspend judgment Readers? DEAR ABBY: I saw the column you printed about who to contact for organ donations, and thought I should write. I am a charter member of a local Lions Club, and we offer “eye will” forms that now also have a box to check for other organ donations besides eyes. It would be a great service to Lions clubs all over the world, in 187 countries, if you would mention in one of your columns that local Lions Club can be contacted to arrange for an organ donation/eye will card. Thank you, Abby, and a great big Lion’s ROAR for your participation. J.J. MERKLE, PRESIDENT, JACKSONVILLE, N.C., BUSINESS LIONS CLUB DEAR MR. MERKLE: That's wonderful news and helpful information Pm pleased to pass along to my readers, some of whom may benifaware of how easily they can get an organ donor card. To receive a collection of Abby’s most memorable — and most frequently requested — poems and essays, send a business-sized, self-addressed envelope, plus check or money order for $3.95 to: Dear Abby’s "Keeper," P.O. Jerry Brite, lake manager, said the Corps released water from the lake at a rate of 2,360 cfs on Thursday. If all went well Thursday night the release rate would be increased to 4,000 cfs today. J “We are waiting for,the filter w Sicede downstream %t Cuero, * onzales and Victoria, those our the control points,” Brite said. On Wednesday runoffs from heavy rains forced the Corps to reduce the outflow to IOO cfs. Runoff into the river reportedly increased its flow to as high as 6,100 cfs. The heavy runoff prompted the Comal County Sheriff’s Office and campgrounds to evacuate people off the river and move campers to higher ground. Brite said the Corps is increasing the release from Canyon Dam because the lake level is at 913.5 feet above mean sea level, which is 4.5 feet above the flood release level of 911 feet. “We will be releasing it through this weekend and into next week,” Brite said. “There will be river flow hazards for people in any inflatable rafts or inner tubes. We are advising that no one go in with inflatable rafts or inner tubes, lf you do get on the river it should be with a highly experienced raft operator.” Judy Gardner. Guadalupe-Bianco RivttV i, Authority public •communications assistant, said the word she has gotten from the Corps is that the release will not affect flooding downstream. Corps regulations designate County amasses chips By DENISE DZIUK Staff Writer Less than three months after implementation, Comal County’s chipping program produced its first surplus of material, and the county must now get rid of the surplus. County Commissioner Moe Schwab said since the chipping program was implemented March 20, participation by county residents has been extraordinary. The program runs Thursdays and Fridays, and currently averages about 12 people a day. Residents who bring material to be chipped can take the mulch home or leave it with the county. Schwab said the county has about 150 yards of chips and is looking to get rid of it * before the pile makes a mess at the road department. “Any time it gets to the size it is now. I’d like to get rid of it,” Schwab said. Last Thursday the court approved taking bids on the surplus material. The county has three full-time employees working for rural recycling and chipping. According to Schwab, the cost of both programs, should be kept in check thanks to a new program that puts inmates to work. Schwab has several inmates working at the programs each day. 8 YEMR OIB M Mm 1,000 LB. OBJECT! rn    _     .    ..HH    un***'1 »file Tm we***’ Incredible! Superhuman! Never Before Witnessed! Gonzales, Cuero and Victoria as “control points” with a maximum rate of 12,000 cfs. That means when the Corps makes a release it must be sure that the Canyon Lake release when combined with local river conditions does not exceed 12,000 cfs at all three locations. “They (Corps) have a computer model that projects what impact a certain release rate will have,” Gardner said. “By the time it reaches downstream, it won’t contribute to downstream flooding.” Gardner said it would take three days for the release to reach Cuero and five days before it reached Victoria, by which time the river levels would have receded. “My understanding is it is going to peak in Victoria Friday and it has already receded at Cuero,” Gardner said. ^ Gardner said^fP^ levels at Cuero had gone down to 16,800 cfs from the 17,500 cfs recorded on Wednesday. At Victoria, the river flow was at 15,600 cfs on Thursday. Brite said the Corps could not wait any longer to increase the release rate. “The urgency is we don’t want water in the flood pool when another storm cell comes which would give us the potential of putting water over the spillway and then causing problems downstream on River Road,” Brite said. The Corps will monitor the release and determine if it will be lowered for next weekend, Brite said. “It will depend on additional rainfall upstream and how fast we can get the water to evacuate from the reservoir,” Brite said.
