New Braunfels Parks and Recreation Department will offer local youngsters a chance to get in touch with nature this summer The departments park ranger division will offer Summer Discovery Camp June 2326 for children 6 to 10 A park ranger will lead children through activities involving wildlife crafts movies hiking canoeing swimming and the environment Participants should remember to bring sack lunches and snacks Hours for the Summer Discovery Camp will be 8 to 5 Pre registration is required and will continue through June 22 The fee is per child A Junior Ranger Camp will be conducted July 1418 for youths ages 11 to 17 Participants will develop an understanding of duties skills and tasks of local park rangers I Hours for the Junior RangerCamp jwill be 10 aim tb 5 Pre registration is the fight against cancer Local car dealer donates car to benefit American Cancer Society 11 A T1 Some lucky ticketholder will drive away with a brand new car after the winning ticket is announced at the American Cancer Society Starlight Gala Starlight in Red White and Blue Friday June 20 at the Civic Center Don Maxwell Chevrolet donated a Chevrolet Malibu the 1997 Motor Trend Car of the Year to ACS The car comes fully equipped and fully loaded Raffle tickets for the Malibu are on sale at local businesses and can be purchased from ACS board members and gala volunteers For more information or to purchase tickets contact chairman Kathy McLeod at 6064115 Only raffle tickets are being sold for this years gala Tickets cost each or for three McLeod said she and husband Don Maxwell donated the car to the ACS gala effort in hopes of securing more money for local services and research in the fight against cancer Both McLeod and Maxwell arl Cancer survivors A queen and her court Photo submitted The Comal Independent Mens Association presented its 1997 queen and her court at its annual Fiesta Mexicana in the Wursthalle Saturday May 17 The regal group from left is Duchess Nicole Garcia Princess April Marie Luna Queen Melinda Aguirre Duchess Maria Rivera and Duchess Sarah Gutierrez Organizers of the fiesta said they were pleased with the turnout and termed the event a success Club Notes Retired Eagles The Retired Eagles Activities Club met at Eagles Hall May 18 and there were 32 members present for the meeting One member Anita Heacker had passed away The next meeting will be 2 to 6 June 15 at Eagles Hall and the main course will be roast beef furnished by the club Members are to bring a covered dish except those having a birthday or anniversary who are to bring a cake or cookies Eagles Auxiliary No 2999 The Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary No 2999 conducted a social meeting May 19 with 33 members present The meeting was opened by the Ritual Team and then initiation was conducted for five new members and one reenrollee New members are Deborah Mason Jacqui Garland Mary Lowrie Deanna Jones and Frieda Mosier Reenrollee is Diana Wesolick They were initiated in honor of the present officers Thankyou notes were read from Orillian Brietzke and Elise Kneupper The District III meeting will be in San Antonio Aug 8 to 10 Sick and Visiting reported on sick members Louise Schwarz Evelyn Peterson Nprma Jean Zinkgraf and Lorraine Yarbrough Sunshine Committee reported on the death of Anita Haecker A memorial will be given to Hospice It was voted to invite Adelene Row to the Nov 17 meeting for her official visit as state president The birthday suppers will begin having one auxiliary and one aerie member as chairman each month and with their workers will cook the meal Sue Heinemeyer and Carolyn Matykiewicz were appointed chairmen for the officer installation May 27 Charter draping was conducted for Anita Haecker Gruene FCE The Gruene Family and Community Education Club met May 14 at the Extension Meeting Room A program was given by Martha Joyce program assistant for Family and Community Services on Tenderizing She prepared round steak by four different methods pounding tenflerizing marinating and au natural Members were to choose the method they preferred by sampling each method and grading on a score sheet Information on identification of cuts of meat and marinades and recipes were distributed to the members Plans were discussed for the July club activity and members decided to wait until next month to make a final decision Ritzie Watkins vice president and council delegate announced the next association meeting formerly known as Council would meet at May 23 The game prize was won by Helen Peterson and the attendance prize was won by May Russell The next meeting will be at 2 June 11 at the Meeting Room with May Russell as hostess A program is planned on plate decorating and will be given by Dawn Penrose Anyone interested in attending may call the County Extension Office at 6203440 People Gale OHara Pospisil Gale OHara Pospisil of New Braunfels will continue to serve as secretary of the National Board of Directors of the National Association of 1 Master Appraisers according to Executive Vice President Deborah J Deane Pospisil was elected as an officer at the Associations Board of Directors meeting in Orlando April 13 Pospisil is an active member of her real estate community and has served as the 1995 president for the South Central Texas Chapter of the NAMA In 1995 she received the highest award granted by NAMA the Award of Excellence The award is given to that member who has contributed outstanding service to various national committees during her membership with NAMA Members of the NAMA national Aboard serve staggered terms with new directors elected by the Association membership to fill the vacancies created by outgoing Directors The board of directors works closely with the National Board of Governors in establishing goals and developing policy for the association The National Association of Master Appraisers designates those members of the real estate industry who have attained a high degree of excellence in the art and science of real estate appraisal It also encourages specialized education in real estate appraisal through cooperating schools that provide the industry with educational courses seminars and workshops Such activities are designed to ensure that the public will receive qualified professional real estate appraisal services when a designated seniors Johnathan Flavin and Joshua Whitley were among 58 graduates who received the Governor Judith Zaffirini Perfect Attendance including The senator celebrated her Governor for a Day festivities April 19 by announcing this award for high school graduates in Senatorial District 21 who reported perfect attendance since their sophomore years Betty Akin Morris of Canyon Lake earned her master of social work in May from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio She previously earned a bachelor of general studies in writing and history from The University of Texas at Dallas in 1979 She and her husband Trebor B Morris have three children Their children and their spouses are Robert and Debbie Morris Catherine and Kelly Brannum and Mitchell and Lorraine Morris She has five grandchildren Jason Lacey Emily Nicholas and Christopher Seguin Beauty School announced the recent graduation of Amy Mullins She enrolled in the cosmetology program in March 1996 and completed clock hours She attained her Amy Mullins diploma in May 1997 After she successfully passes the exam she will be licensed by the Texas Cosmetology Commission Mullins is the daughter of John and Janelle Mullins of New Braunfels She was a 1994 Canyon High School graduate She is married to Kenneth Brown They have one child Kenndal age 22 months They are members of the Tree of Life Fellowship She will offer hair care services for the entire family at Felger and Friends in New Braunfels Jason Laubach of Spring Branch is among the 1997 graduating class of Clarendon Colleges Ranch and Feedlot Operations Program according to RFO Director Jerry Gage Graduation ceremonies were conducted April 25 in the Harned Sisters Fine Arts Auditorium at Clarendon College David Compton son of Don and Rita Compton has been named to the Oklahoma Christian University Honor Roll for the spring 1997 trimester Compton is a senior majoring in electrical communications from New Braunfels The Honor Roll recognizes the academic performance of students who have earned between a and grade point average on a four point scale The 235 students who were named to the Honor Roll were announced by Jeanine Varner vice president of academic affairs for the university Bruce Rogers McConaghy received a master of science degree from Texas University at Kingsville at commencement ceremonies May 9 A total of 383 students graduated with 277 receiving bachelors degrees 104 receiving masters degrees and two receiving doctorates The computer science department at Southwest Texas State University recognized Russel Allen Wunderlich for a scholarship in undergraduate studies for 1996 97 He was also on the Deans List during that time He is the son of John and Sandra Wunderlich The Victoria College School of Professional Nursing in Seguin had a Pinning Ceremony on May 11 for graduates of its Associate Degree Nursing Program The event was at the Guadalupe Valley Hospital Teaching Center in Seguin Receiving their pins as graduates of the program were Kelly Lynn Holmes of New Braunfels Mary Belinda MendozaMcDermott of Spring Branch and Ronda Gail Peterson of New Braunfels Joan C Hubbard former New Braunfels resident has been promoted to the rank of professor in the College of Business at the University of West Georgia Carrollton Hubbard received her doctorate in business education at Oklahoma State University in 1985 She was a faculty member in the Department of Management and Marketing at Southwest Texas State University from 1985 to 1994 where she achieved the rank of tenured associate professor Hubbards older daughter Jennifer Krause and her family are residents of New Braunfels Her younger daughter Allison Roderick is a junior at Texas A4 M University Joan C Hubbard Russel Allen Wunderlich Amy Michelle Cook of New Braunfels received a BSE in social studies from The University of Kansas in the spring of 1997 She is the daughter of Ted and Kathy Cook of New Braunfels New Braunfels Calvary Baptist Academy honored its graduates and students in special ceremonies May 19 at Tree Tops Riverside Grill A dinner was served for the academy and guests before the students were honored with awards pins plaques and trophies in the 14th annual celebration The 1997 graduates are Rebecca Lynn Beatty daughter of Pastor and Mrs David Beatty and Alive Delia Rodriguez daughter of Mr and Mrs Refugio Rodriguez Rebecca was named class valedictorian while Delia was named salutatorian Both will attend Pensacola Christian College this fall as they seek to continue their Christian academics Allison Renee Kraft a graduating senior from New Braunfels High School and Corbee Zane Wunderlich a graduating senior from Canyon High School have been awarded oneyear Youth Livestock Show Scholarships sponsored by the State Fair of Texas Kraft participated in the State Fair of Texas Youth Livestock Show in 1990 and 1996 She showed in the Youth Swine and Youth Market Steer shows and placed a fourth and a fifth In high school she has been an active member of 4H Club Golf Team German Club National Honor Society and the Student Council She has held numerous offices in those clubs and received many awards and honors during her high school career Kraft plans to attend Texas College Station and major in animal science She is the daughter of Bobby and Donna Kraft of New Braunfels Wunderlich participated in the State Fair of Texas Youth Livestock Show from 1988 to 1996 He showed in the Youth Swine shows In high school he has been an active member of the FFA 4H Club National Honor Society Football German Club and Marching and Concert Band He has held numerous offices in those activities and received many awards and honors during his high school career Wunderlich plans to attend Texas College Station and major in agricultural science He is the son of Kenneth and Mary Louise Wunderlich of New Braunfels Wendy Earwood Hinsey of New Braunfels was placed on the scholastic leadership roll at Bee County College during the spring semester To be recognized for the honor students must successfully complete at least 12 semester hours of college credit and earn passing grades in all courses with grade point averages of at least on the four point scale Charla McCartney of New Braunfels received a bachelor of science in biology from Sul Ross State University during spring commencement Natasha Asaria and Evan Mathis eighthgrade students were selected as recipients of the Braunfels Foundation Award The award is funded by the Harry and Christine Dierks Memorial Fund Tom Burrus president of the Braunfels Foundation Trust presented the award to the students May 20 at the Civic Center Also participating were Doug Miller chairman of the board and Michael Meek president of the Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce The award consists of a savings bond and a specially prepared framed certificate The recipients names were added to a permanent plaque on display at Canyon Middle School According to Burrus the criteria for the award are a students record of good citizenship ethical conduct academic performance attendance and participation in extracurricular activities at school and in the community While a students grades are reviewed the emphasis of this award is primarily designed to recognize outstanding Burrus said Runners up for the award in the eighthgrade at Canyon Middle School were Rebecca Jost Sarah Meckel and Sean Moeney They received savings bonds and a certificate The selection committee consisted of a school administrator counselor two teachers and an officer of the schools PTCA Susan E Ruppel of New Braunfels received a MA in psychology from Stephen F Austin State University during recent spring commencement
