New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - May 18, 1997, New Braunfels, Texas Herald-Zeitung □ Sunday, May 18, 1997 g SAhearty thanks Today, I would like to thank all the donors and all the purchasers and all the volunteers who helped make the Comal County Senior Citizens Center’s first annual Bluebonnet Country Music Fest, April 26, a reality and a success. Success was limited somewhat. After much discussion, it was decided that the weather may have been responsible. It turned cold that day and rained early on. One of the main reasons for not reaching the goal we expected may have been the short time we had to organize and publicize. The whole idea was only formulated in January, and then location and ideas totally changed in February, so time was short for this type of undertaking. Also there were conflicts such as a golf tournament, Fiesta, Lions district convention, Eagles dance, etc. But, we did it! And to all those who    are interested and who worked so hard, and to those faithful people who came to the event, we want to say thanks again. After all expenses, we did make approximately $7,500 and that’s not bad. It’s just that we had expected to make around $15,000. Oh well, just wait till next year. It was the live and silent auctions Marie Dawson that really carried the day. It was amazing how many people attended the auctions and bought many items. Also, it was great fun. T. K. Schneider is an excellent auctioneer, and I think everyone had fun. The grand champion and reserve champion winners for the best German chocolate cake as judged by Mayor Jan Kennady, Assistant to the City Manager Don Ferguson, Fred Stockwell of KNBT-92.1 and Color Express’ Karen Cook, were Clara Schriewer and Evelyn Friesenhahn respectively. Clara’s cake auctioned for $60 and was sold to Frances Boyd-Hull, and Evelyn’s cake was auctioned to Marlene Thomas for $45. Evelyn is one the Center’s very own cooks. Aren’t we lucky. Again, our many thanks to the Herald-Zeitung and to KNBT-92.1 Radio New Braunfels for the fine coverage of the April 26 event. Let me tell you about the nice offer made by Color Express. Through the month of May they have a special on color copies, 99 cents each, any quantity, 8 1/2 by ll inches. No minimums. The beautiful thing about this is that Adam and Karen Cook are giving 25 cents on each copy directly to the Comal County Senior Citizen’s Center expansion project. How’s that for community spirit. Adam says that’s the way it works. The businesses helping the community and the community helping businesses. And, believe me, we need your help. Also, Fred Stockwell is planning a “Birthday Bash” for the New Braunfels radio stations in Gruene Hall on June 8 with bands and dancing and all kinds of things. Proceeds from the bash will benefit the Senior Center’s expansion fund. We’ll know more about that later and pass on the details. Now, for a construction update. Things are moving. The rains and a couple of mishaps have caused some delay in the procedures, but the latest report from Don Shoch, construction manager, is that the building shell will be up by July 18, and kitchen work will begin Aug. I. We will still be serving congregate meals every day and preparing and delivering home-delivered meals every day. It will take a little rearranging, and maybe a tiny bit of inconvenience, but we’ll do it. We always manage somehow. So, keep on coming to lunch. As the construction proceeds, the need for money increases as you all know. If there is any way you or your business can help us, either cash donation or with construction materials, the membership, staff and board of trustees of the Comal County Senior Citizens Foundation will greatly appreciate your generosity. Thanks to all those who have already contributed. (Marie Dawson writes a weekly column for the Herald-Zeitung on matters of interest to senior citizens.) Eden Home offers books to aid in care of elderly Generous gift Ema Buicks of Converse recently donated a tract of land at the comer of Crestway Road and FM1976 in Converse to Eden Home. From left, Merritt Schumann, Bracks and Rev. Ernest S. Dean Jr. participated in the signing. Elders feted Eden Home will celebrate Older Americans Month today beginning at 2 p.m. with a concert featuring James Smith and Jim and Diane Wesolick. A worship service will follow at 2:30. Eden Home Executive Director Herman Sabrsula will speak: “Powered by the Heart:    A Celebration of Age.” Special to the Herald-Zeitung Placing a loved one in a care center is one of life’s most unpleasant and unwanted experiences. It becomes more inevitable as people live longer, families are spread out, and more adults are working outside the home. Making the decision often comes at a time of crisis and is usually not a planned choice. The time to make careful decisions is before the need is immediate. Regardless of when the decision is made, it is not an easy task. It is less traumatic and emotionally laden, when the relative or person involved knows that he or she is doing the right thing in the best possible way. In order to help the citizens of New Braunfels make these decisions, Eden Home, as a service to the community,    is offering    an opportunity for families    to thoroughly study the various aspects of such placement and their role as caregivers. Two informative books on these subjects are available on loan from Eden Home at no obligation: “The Nursing Home Experience,” by Dr. HugfalKfe a family guide to * making the Hest decisions, coping with the stress, helping the elderly to adjust, dealing with the staff and enriching the family experience. Driftwood The other book is “The Caregivers’ Roller Coaster,” Aptly titled, it is a practical guide to caregiving for the frail elderly, by Billie Jackson, herself a caregiver and volunteer. It deals with letting go, respite care, family involvement, community services, Medicare, costs, long-distance caregiving, placement, etc. Simply written, it offers great support for the average person. It is full of practical advise and information. Both books list numerous national and area resources available throughout the United States. These books can be checked out at the front office of Eden Home during regular duty hours, 8 a m. to 5 p.m. They may be kept for two weeks, with extensions allowable if needed longer. There is absolutely no cost or obligation for this service. It matters not what care facility might be chosen or is presently used; the use of the books is open to all. Regardless of whether or not a nursing home placement is on the horizon, or there is already a loved one in a care center, families will find the study of these books useful.
