At that time, parents who gave loans to children and other family members applying for FHA mortgages had to certify in writing that their financial aid was more of a gift than a loan. Since October of last year, however. Congress voted to change that policy so parents could give their children unsecured personal loans (with or without interest) or loans secured by the new homes. These new rules allow parents to be more above-board about their intentions. The old policy forced many to call loam "gifts". Now. parents can be more forthcoming with their help and enable their children to better take advantage of today's favorable mortgage interest rates.
