New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - April 23, 1997, New Braunfels, Texas Herald-Zeitung □ Wednesday, April 23,1997 g 3A Second trial for Delgado looks remarkably like the first By ABE LEVY Staff Writer Sister expecting new brother sings baby-sitting blues DEAR ABBY: I am a 14-year-old girl and I’m very worried. My mother is having a baby this summer. I’m happy for her and my I stepfather (this is their first baby [together), but I think they are expecting me to take on a lot more ; responsibility than I had anticipated. My mother and my aunts make comments like, “Get used to changing diapers now, and you’ll be a natural once your new brother is bom.” Or, “Just think, you have a baby-sitter in the house so you won’t have to worry about getting one.” Well, I don’t want to be a mother to this baby. I just want to be a sister, one who loves and holds, and occasionally changes diapers or feeds the baby. I don’t know how to talk to my mother about this. I am afraid that I will upset her and she’ll think I don’t want this newcomer in our family. She has included me in a lot of the preparations, like shopping and decorating the baby’s room. My mothers works full-time and my stepfather works six days a [•week. I already take care of my younger sister after school and when ;-my parents go out occasionally. I want to enjoy my teen years, free •to make my own plans that won’t be : overruled when my parents want me ;to baby-sit. Can you give me any ! suggestions? J THE OLDEST SISTER ;• DEAR OLDEST SISTER: It is ■not unreasonable for your parents to expect you to watch the baby Tor short periods when they are [fcbsent, but they should not depend Ion you for all of the baby’s care. •You will be in school for a good part of the time while your mother I Works, so she will need another *; caretaker for your brother in any ; event Show this letter to your parents. ; The important thing to remember I. is “compromise”: They should not 6 ‘expect you to be an unpaid baby-sitter for your new brother; you [should expect to pitch in some of -the time. You might discover, after • the baby arrives, that you want to ;spend more time with him. Good -luck, and congratulations on the ;new arrival. a • For everything you need to know Iabout wedding planning, order *“How to Have a Lovely Wedding. The second day in the aggravated robbery trial of Robert Delgado is shaping up to be a repeat of the first trial more than three weeks ago, prosecutors concluded. “Ifs exactly the same trial,” Assistant District Attorney Jim Noble said, after he brought four of the same witnesses to the stand Tuesday. The only difference, prosecutors said, is that Delgado is representing himself in a case that charges him with taking a clerk’s purse. The previous trial stemmed from the same incident and resulted in a conviction and life sentence for stealing money from Family Credit Store, 273 W. San Antonio St. Noble plans to call many of the same witnesses to the stand today, including police officers and victims, who testified in Delgado’s previous trial. In Delgado’s cross examinations Tuesday, asked police how they gathered evidence and why the purse in question has never been found. Clinic From Pogo I Adams said immunizations are critical for children because of the diseases they prevent. She said no one wants to see a child ill, and this clinic is just one way to help prevent that. “We’re really family-oriented. That’s what we do,” Adams said. “It just seemed like a good marriage for Schlitterbahn and the department ofheahh.” The Texas Department of Health is also trying to spread the message about the importance of immunizations. It has space for milestones such as first steps and first tooth, as well as space to document which vaccines were received when. Sherrie Brammall, with Schlitteibahn Waterparks, said both of these booklets, as well as other information will also be available at Saturday’s clinic. He also questioned why no hair samples or finger prints were taken from clothing and other items submitted as evidence. The life sentence from the previous conviction should include at least 30 years in prison before Delgado would be eligible for parole, prosecutors said. Noble said he expects to rest his case this afternoon after which Delgado will begin presenting the defense’s case. Delgado, 42, of Converse still has charges of theft and attempted escape BOOKLET INFORMATION For to receive additional information on immunizations or the two booklets currently being offered, contact the Texas Department of Health Immunization Division at 1-800-252-9152. lf the child has Medicaid coverage, booklets may be ordered from the Texas Health Steps Program at (800) 252-8263. Delgado’s court-appointed attorney, Vicki Langham, was instructed to assist him in representing himself. Langham said the incident was a case of mistaken identity and that some surprises may occur Thursday. She added that the district attorney’s office should have combined this trial with the previous one. “I think there are going to be some changes,” she said. “There are some things Mr. Delgado wanted to bring forward. It would have been easier to try this thing together but the state didn’t want to do that.” Delgado is expected to call his brother, James, a Houston attorney, to the stand. James was married to one of the clerks at the credit store who testified in the earlier trial. Because of that relationship, Delgado has said, he was mistakenly named as the robber who took money and a purse from the store. * 5W TOines and Spouts OownfaT t'ft *16” Unit one / any add I $17.99 Cuervo Gold McCormick Smirnoff B I lr - HO Lint OM/ any add I $14 99 I tr-HO $799 Limit rn .Walker Red WL.
