(AP) Every time Sedate Thread hit a shot in the fourth quarter, the Houston guard looked at the New Jersey Nets and screamed. The words weren’t directed at anyone. It was just Thrcatt’s way to express a certain joy, knowing his NUA career is seemingly back on track. The 13-year veteran missed the first four months of the season following knee surgery, and he didn’t hook up with anyone until signing with the Rockets on March I. Thread had his best game since his signing, scoring 11 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter to help the Rockets rally for a 97-8(> decision over the Nets on Tuesday night. The win was actually the work of two recently signed free agents. Houston Mayor’s plan glvtt IfKpwytfi ownership of tawna HOUSTON (AP) - Mayor Bob Lanier favors a plan to allow taxpayers to become part-owners of sports teams who play in tax-supported stadiums, according to the Texas Journal of The Wall Street Journal. “This is a useful option to look at in considering the best ways to keep a team in town and for the people to get their money’s worth,” Lanier said. Lanier said he would consider adding a public-owncrship component to any one of the Houston-backed bills being debated in the Legislature that would provide for taxpayer-financed sports facilities. He’s proposed the idea in informal discussions with holders of sports franchises in Houston, among others, Lanier said. DUNN’S    PO    Box85 FISH FARMS, INC. “JJS Buford gets chance for Rangers By MICHAEL A LUTZ AP Sports Writer PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. — Damon Buford has been around long enough to know that nothing in baseball is a sure thing. When Texas Rangers manager Johnny Oates gave Buford the opportunity to play center field for the defending AL West champions, Buford knew it was a “chance of a lifetime" "I’ve had chances to start before but not where I’ve been penciled in as the opening day starter," Buford said. "But there arc no clinchers until April I. That’s what I’m working for. Hopefully when April I arrives, PU be exit there in center field." Buford got his break when last year’s center fielder, Darryl Hamilton. signed a big free agent contract with the San Francisco Giants “I know it’s pretty much a chance of a lifetime to get a chance to play every day in the major leagues and to prove to yourself and a lot of other people that you belong," Buford said. “This is going to be some kind of year.” Defense has been Buford’s forte. He’s already made several highlight catches. It's what Gates expected. “You can put a line in your computer that says, ‘Buford made an outstanding running catch,’ and have it ready because you’re going to use that line a lot this season," Gates said.
