New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - February 14, 1997, New Braunfels, Texas Love must be proven on daily basis Mardi gras is over, Shrove Tuesday is over, Pancake Tuesday is over, Camaval is over, Fastnacht is over. Each culture had a name for the day before Ash Wednesday. The French paraded a fat ox on this day: “Mardi” — Tuesday; “gras" — fat. The English called it Shrove Tuesday from shrive, to confess and receive forgiveness. They also called it Pancake Tuesday because in the old, very strict days not even eggs were eaten during Lent since they came from flesh, chickens. The Latin Americans called it Camaval from the Latin “camel e van urn,” meaning “taking away flesh,” or “no meat.” The Germans called it “Fastnacht,” fasting eve. Wednesday we celebrated the beginning of the penitential season of Lent. On this day most Christians received ashes on    their foreheads to remind them that they are mortal beings. They are blessed with ashes in the sign of the cross and _ _ the words: _    “Remember that Ray    dust thou art and to dust thou shalt return.” Palm branches left over from last Easter were burned to provide those ashes. Thus we are reminded not only that we shall die, but since Christ has risen, we also shall rise if we but live up to our Baptismal promises. In Baptism, we rejected Satan, all his works and all Kaufman his empty promises. We professed faith in the Father, in Jesus his son, and in the Holy Spirit. Human life promises we will die; Spiritual life promises that we will live forever. Unfortunately, our humanity keeps getting in the way of our spirituality. We tend to sin, to forget our promise to reject Satan and all he stands for. Thus the need for a penitential season. Lent is not merely a season for penance, it is primarily a season for love, perfect love, love of God and love of neighbor. Love and forgiveness are synonymous. As that old song says: “You can’t have one without the other.” Jesus forgave even those who crucified him. We must forgive everyone who has hurt us. We must love as Jesus loves, a pure forgiving love. During these 40 days we commemorate the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus. We should look upon it as a time to forgive all people and renew our love for all people, not just in words but in actions as well. Jesus told us to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to visit the sick and those in prison, to welcome the stranger. Love cannot be proven, it must be lived. Love is not love until it’s given away. How appropriate it is that we celebrate Valentine’s Day today. This is sweetheart day, the day we profess undying love for another. So have a Happy Valentine’s Day, and you may prove your love of God and neighbor this Lenten season. (Ray Kaufman is a deacon at Sis. Peter and Paul Catholic Church).Religion Briefs New bishop in Florida also loads relief services PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) Bishop John ll. Ritard, the head of Catholic Relief Services and the National Black C atholic Congress, is the new bishop of the Diocese of Pensacola-Tallahassee. Ritard. 56. the urban vicar of the Archdiocese of Baltimore, was named by Pope John Paul ll as the fourth bishop of the north Florida diocese of nearly 62.000 Catholics in 16 counties. He celebrated Mass last week at historic St. Michael’s Church, a parish established in Pensacola in 1781. He will be installed at a Mass on March 13 at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. In his new duty. Ritard will oversee 49 parishes, 53 priests and 2.500 Catholic school children. Ritard succeeds Bishop John Smith, who was appointed coadjutor bishop of Trenton, N.J., last February. Man calling himsalf Ilia devil fobs churchgoers BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — A man calling himself the devil burst into a Birmingham church and robbed the worshipers, telling the congregation he had killed a man the day before. “This is a stick-up, and I want all your purses and wallets,” witnesses quoted the man as saying. “I’m the devil. I don’t like God and God don’t like me.” Police said the suspect, McArthur Peake, 29. then told the Wednesday night congregation at the Center Street Baptist that he had killed a convenience store clerk. “He told God and everybody,” said police officer Anthony Parks.
