STATION Texas AP Texas tied No 23 Texas after eras ing a I0point halftimc deficit and the Aggies felt an upset in the making when the Longhoms Al Colcman was called for traveling with 32 seconds remain ing coach Tony Bnrone called a play that worked earlier in the game but the intended target Calvin Davis slipped and the coachs son Brian Bnrone was short on a desperation shot at the buzzer with two players on him With three Aggies fouling out in quick succession in overtime Texas pulled away for an 8676 victory Wednesday night were confident near the end of the game and thought we could beat them in regulation but it didnt work Davis said We had some key players in foul trouble and that hurt espe cially in Reggie Freeman scored 30 points half from the freethrow line to lead Texas 9 4 Aggies never got closer than four points after that This was a typical game between us Ive brought great teams in here before and lost This is the toughest place to Texas coach Tom Pcndcrs said I feel his job in San Francisco By DENNIS GEORGATOS AP Sports Writer SAN FRANCISCO AP George Seifert is walking away from his job as coach of the San Francisco 49ers a star tling departure signaling the overhaul of a team that won five Super Bowls and was known for its continuity California coach Steve Mariucci a newcomer to the 49ers organization but not their offensive system is expected to be named as Seiforts successor and become just the third 49crs coach in 18 years The formal announcement could come sometime today Seifert with the 49crs organization for 17 years including the last eight as head coach led San Francisco to two of its Super Bowl victories and had the highest winning percentage by a coach in NFL history Sounding very much like Lou I loltz Seifert on Wednesday said leaving was the right thing for him to do a decision he arrived at in part during his justcon cluded fishing trip to Mexico Basically there was a sense and a feel that there fteeds to bcsome changes offensive coordinator with assur ances he would become the head coach in a year or two Mariucci declined that oftcr but apparently received a call from Policy on Tuesday night about the head coaching job after Seifert informed him he was quitting Before Georges decision all offers were related to the coordinating job After Tuesday we changed Policy said Policy said the team had only one can didate in mind for the job I le declined to identify Mariucci us that individual but did say the replacement was coming from outside the organization He said one reason the team was bring ing in a newcomer
