New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - January 16, 1997, New Braunfels, Texas Herald-Zeitung n Thursday, January 16, 1997 n 9 Horns over Ags in OT COLLEGE STATION, Texas (AP) Texas A&M tied No. 23 Texas after erasing a 10-point halftime deficit, and the Aggies felt an upset in the making when the Longhorns' Al Coleman was called for traveling with 32 seconds remaining AAM coach Tony Barone called a play that worked earlier in the game, hut I the intended taigct. Calvin Davis, slipped ; and the coach’s son, Brian Barone, was j short on a desperation shot at the buzzer I with two players on him. With three Aggies fouling out in quick succession in overtime, Texas pulled away for an 86-76 victory Wednesday night. We were confident near the end of the game and thought we could heat them in regulation, but it didn t work out," Davis said. We had some key players in foul trouble and that hurt, especially in overtime " Reggie Freeman scored 30 points, half from the ftec-throw line, to lead Texas <9-4, 3-1 Big 12). which beat Texas AAM for the seventh straight time. This is my fourth year coming in here, and every time, we have to step it up and play even harder,” Freeman said. Brandy Perryman had 15 points for Texas, and Clack added 14. Shanne Jones had 16 points for the Aggies (6-8,0-4). Calvin Davis added 14 points for the Aggies, while Tracey Anderson and Dano Qucsada had 12 each and Jerald Brow n 11. A sellout crowd of 7,578 at G. Rollic White Coliseum spurred the Aggies on after they fell behind 38-28 at the half Turnovers let the Aggies rally. The Aggies took a 50-49 lead on Qucsada’s layup with 12:27 remaining. Freeman came back with a jumper for a 51-50 llad The next A&M lead came with 4:21 left on Davis' layup, but Sheldon Quarles tied the game for Texas with two free throws. The lead changed hands the rest of the way, with neither team leading by more than two points. Qucsada's lefthanded hank shot tied the game at 72 with 42 seconds to play in regulation Texas committed 25 turnovers, and Texas A&M had 15. Texas A&M actually made six more field goals, but Texas was 36-of-48 at the frec-throw line, while the Aggies were 15-of-24. Coleman s 3-pointer and Clack’s two free throws gave the Longhorns the lead in the first 45 seconds of overtime, and the Aggies never got closer than four points after that. This was a typical game between us I’ve brought great teams in here before and lost. This is the toughest place to play," Texas coach Tom Penders said. I feel for Tony and his kids I’ve said it before, if the fans would come out like this every night, A&M would be a totally different team " Aggies coach Barone said: I’ve got no complaints. The guys were dead yesterday after the trip to Nebraska. They came out tonight and played with pease, pndc and played hard," Barone said. It was a great crowd. We’re going to win. I don’t know exactly when, but these players played hard " Seifert leaves his job in San Francisco By DENNIS GEORGATOS AP Sports Writer SAN FRANCISC O (AP) Gcoige Seifert is walking away from his job as coach of the San Francisco 49crs, a startling departure signaling the overhaul of a team that won five Super Bowls and was known for its continuity. California coach Steve Mantled, a newcomer to the 49crs organization, but not their offensive system, is expected to be named as Seifert’s successor and become just the third 49ers coach in 18 years. The formal announcement could come sometime today Seifert, with the 49crs organization for 17 years, including the last eight as head coach, led San Francisco to two of its Super Bowl victories and had the highest winning percentage by a coach in NFL history. Sounding very much like (ahi Holtz. Seifert on Wednesday said leaving was the nght thing for him to do, a decision he arrived at in part during his just-concluded fishing trip to Mexico. Basically, there was a sense and a feel that there needs to be some changes ‘This thing eventually had to come to an end. It’s boon a great eight years In a tough position’ — George Seifert made. I came back with the feeling that this was best for myself and for the 49crs." Seifert said Wednesday This thing eventually had to come to an end. It’s been a great eight years in a tough position," Seifert said. Ile added he’ll fulfill tile final year of his contract with the 49ers as a consultant to the team Team officials did not immediately announce a replacement, but all signs point to Mantled as the next 49ers coach Team president Carmen Policy said no one currently on the 49ers coaching staff was considered tor the job. Manucci also served notice to Cal officials that he was leaving, a school source said, and he spent much of Wednesday huddled with his players and coaches to let them know about his deci sion He kind of told them the situation came up real abruptly." Cal running hocks coach Wayne Moses said Policy had dinner with Mariucci on Sunday- night, and wanted him to become 49ers offensive coordinator, with assurances he would become the head coach in a year or two. Mariucci declined that offer, but apparently received a call from Policy on Tuesday night about the head coaching job after Seifert informed him he was quitting Before Georges decision, all offers were related to the coordinating job After Tuesday, we changed directions." Policy said Policy said the team hail only one candidate iii mind for the job Ile declined to identify Mariucci as that individual, but did say the replacement was coming from outside the organization He said one reason the team was fringing in a newcomer was to lessen the pressure and defuse the Super Bowl or die" mentality that has become associated with the 49erv You have to understand he needs some time to establish his roots,” Policy said.
