New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - December 27, 1996, New Braunfels, Texas Herald-Zeitung rj Friday, December 27, 1996 □ 7It’s time to return Christ to Christmas In a recent article a well-known theologian was discussing his concern about certain Christians and their approaches to Christianity. What bothered him most was his discovery that although they spoke approvingly about love for others, and even God’s love for us, few were willing to talk about their love for God. They judged that it is wrong not to love people, but really expressed no thoughts about neglecting God. Many contemporary Christians subscribe to Jesus’s second great commandment but ignore His first. One of my favorite Christmas stories is P.L. Traver’s “The Fox at the Manger” which is written about the birth of Jesus. “It was late at night. Silence had dropped like a stone into the stable, spreading out ring on ring of stillness, away to the fields and the farthest hills. “A faint glow came from the manger, where William I    ‘he Ch'ld laV William L.    quietly in the Schroeder    straw. Around him stood the friendly beasts,    their foreheads drooping upon their chests. They were peaceful and still, like furry statues. “But presently, their ears gave an imperceptible twitch. A sound, too delicate to be heard by human ear, came slowly nearer. As the moon slid out of a cloud, they saw, picking his way through the spangled fields, a small red fox.” The story continues with the animals becoming alarmed and frightened by the presence of the fox. He tells them he is an enemy of man, but he will be a friend to the one who is not yet grown. As the fox approaches the manger, the Child sees him and inquires why he has come. The fox tells him that he knows what will happen when he becomes a man. Just like the fox, he too will be hunted and killed, and for that reason will need great courage. It is for that reason he has braved the danger to come and give his gift of cunning to the Child. Listening intently, the animals are amazed by what they hear. How will the fox elude the hunter if he gives away his cunning? They do not understand the great love that the fox has for the child. Saint Thomas Aquinas wrote that the things and who we love identify what we are. This statement is relevant to our approach to our feelings about Christmas. For example, why do we replace the “Christ” with an “X" in Xmas. The “X” symbol signifies no in our society. . Our greetings are no longer “Merry Christmas”, but “Happy Holidays”. We spend countless hours buying presents and only a few minutes, if any, thinking of God. Even our laws attempt to prohibit our involvement with the Son of God in public settings. Every Christian is called to a deep, mystical union with God through His Son. We must encounter Christ face to face. “And we, with our unveiled faces, reflecting like mirrors the brightness of the Lord, all grow brighter and brighter as we are turned into the image we reflect ..." (II Cor. 3:18). By our love of God, we are truly turned into the image we reflect. Our heart is renewed by a spiritual metamorphosis. A vision develops within us to experience this love. This incredible giving of love between Creator and created allows a mystical bond to be forged. This is the bond that drew the fox to the stable, allowed him to endure the wrath of the animals, and present his wondrous gift. It was a gift of pure love, which emanated from the love of the Child. The spirit of love for God cannot be suppressed, for restlessness persists. The hunger for God will not die within our hearts. In glimpses and passing moments it invades our lives. Christmas gives us the opportunity to reforge the bond of love for God and a chance to return to the manger with our gift of love. So let us invite the Christ Child to our parties, our caroling, opening of presents, and the gatherings of friends and families. lf we do, it will be a joyous Christmas which shall remain with us through eternity. (William L. Schroeder is a deacon af Sts Peter and Paul Church). iI Advertise on our church page, Call 625-9144 Ferguson - Hermes Insurance Agency SINCE 1932 625-4500 IM W.
