New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - December 27, 1996, New Braunfels, Texas 6 Q HeraldZeitung g Friday December 27 1996 Church Life To talk with Managing Editor Micah Boyd about Church Life call 6259144 ext 220 Church Life Bread of Life Hope the key to New Years resolutions My favorite Christmas movie stars Bing Crosby Danny Kay and Rosemary Clooney in the classic White I love the last scene where the barn doors are thrown open to show the beautiful snow falling on the landscape as Bing and cast croon Im dreaming of a white Christmas The movie hit the big screen in 1954 and changed forever the way we should have Christmas Christmas should be complete with snow said Bing And if he said it I believe it I dont suppose it is any shock that it didnt happen again this year snow that is on Christmas But without fail even in the most cynical heart there is that thread of hope that this will be the year By now all the packages are thrown out along with the lost part to someones and life has returned to the holding pattern of the season Dreams are being turned away from Christmas and toward the new year Maybe next year it will snow So what do your dreams consist of What hopes and dreams do you have for 1997 Hopes and dreams are very Dennis Gallaher different from the classic New Years Resolutions Resolutions arc the gut up and getonwithit promises that regularly crash and burn by February The word means to set a course of action and walk in it Something that is easy to promise arid hard to do Hopes though are not as much thinking as feeling Hope is an emotion and often times out of our control to really bring about Hope is not only in something but also in someone Someone who is greater than I to perform the impossible Someone who can take hopes and dreams and translate them into flesh and blood That is why 1 have learned to place my New Years hopes in the hand of One much greater than I The Jewish people have a saying It is this O Israel hope in the Lord For with the Lord there is loving kindness And with him is abundant redemption The New Testament writer put the same thought another way Hope does not disappoint because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us Hopes and dreams are the seeds of reality When they are sown in the garden of the Master He takes great time and care to sec that they produce a good harvest Pruning will come Life sapping weeds will be pulled But in the end will be a harvest of peace and righteous living That is why it is best to leave our impossible hopes and dreams in the hands of the One who treats all of them with loving kindness At the beginning of this month I spent a day alone in the Hill Country Early in the crisp air of the morning I set out to climb a steep hill to a mesa that I have gone to often over the years All the way I poured out my heart to the Lord For several hours I gave my dreams and hopes to Him For sure I thought I had overdone it The thought struck me that I couldnt even remember some of the prayers I had prayed I couldnt recall all that I had dumped from my heart in the lap of my Father That is often the case isnt it There are so many needs that we cant even remember them all But God does The sense that God remembered all my cares struck me As I had given all my dreams to Him He had given all His peace to me He does not forget the prayers of His children So start out this year short on resolutions and long on hopes and dreams Your Father is full of loving kindness and will treat them with great care Place your hope in Him and you will not be disappointed After all there is not a single care or a dream or a prayer that He forgets No not one Not even one Dennis Gallaher is pastor of the Freedom bringing volunteer clergy members into public school classrooms is constitutional District Judge Joe Fisher denied a request filed by an attorney for three anonymous Beaumont Independent School District parents who sought a restraining order to stop the Clergy in Schools program The court feels clergymen may volunteer and serve a very worthy purpose and Fisher said at the end of a hearing The court does not find that theres any violation of Constitutional Volunteer clergy members have visited Beaumont schools since September to meet with groups of students selected to represent a cross section of the student body Students may choose not to attend the meetings but parents are not asked for permission according to testimony The students whose parents filed the lawsuit include four girls from three different families None of the children have attended the voluntary program Scott Newar who filed the lawsuit Nov 18 has said the plaintiffs are religious but believe the program interferes with their right to choose how religion will be presented to their children Newar argued Monday that the program is unconstitutional because it entangles government and religion The school district Newar said is trying to get religion in through the back Newar said his clients arent opposed to having clergy volunteer in schools but wanted other professionals included as well TODAYS
