The New Braunfels Municipal Gorf Course got verbal confirmation Thursday from the Texas Historical Commission to renovate the clubhouse. The stone walls of the structure, which was built in 1936 by the Works Progress Administration, will remain intact. “It’s about time,” Golf Pro Chris Acker said. “We’re adding a snack bar, and there will be a much larger seating area for when you get through playing” Jack Abshire, a member of the New Braunfels Men’s Golf Association, said the new clubhouse will be a welcome addition to the golf course. “We’ve been needing a new facility,” Abshire said. “It’s going to be nice with all the additions. We’ve been needing it for so long.” Acker said construction could start as soon as next week. The renova tion is expected to take six months to complete. Until then, a trailer will serve as the clubhouse. The $600,000 renovation is being paid for by the Capital Improvement Fund. The money was raised through a $1 green fee increase for New Braunfels residents and an increase of $2 to $4 for non-residents. The fund also has helped the course to build cart paths and retaining walls on water hazards on holes 2 and 4, purchase 25 golf carts and install a sprinkler system. No tax money was used, Abshire said. The large seating area will be quite an improvement over the small room in the current clubhouse, Acker said. “It's going to be pretty good size,” Acker said. “Right now the room is being used for our ladies group, the New Braunfels Men's Golf Association and the Senior Men’s Golf Association. The room holds about 30, and their tournaments usually have about 60 people in them.” Acker said a new snack bar will be just one of the many improve- “We’ve been needing a new facility. It’s going to be nice with all the additions. We’ve been needing it for so long.’ — Jack Abshire Mens Golf Association ments made at the golf course in the past year. “We'll be able to serve food now,” Acker said. “Sandwiches, hot dogs, hamburgers, nothing really big. We added a cart barn, which was finished in May. We're really trying to modernize everything.” Acker said the renovations will cause some changes at the golf course in the coming months. “It’s going to be uncomfortable for a while,” Acker said. “But that’s the way it has to be.” Herald-Zertung photo by MICHAEL DARNALL An artist’s rendition shows what the golf course's club house will look like after 3,500 square feet is added. DeBesse returns to head SWT SAN MARCOS (AP) — Bob DeBesse returned to his roots today as he was named head football coach of Southwest Texas. The 37-year-old DeBesse served as offensive coordinator at Minnesota under Jim Wacker, who resigned at the end of the season. Under DeBesse, the Gophers were ranked in the top 30 in passing offense in all five years of his tenure. DeBesse played at Southwest Texas from 1978-80 and was a student assistant coach under Wacker the next two years when the Bobcats won consecutive Division ll NCAA Championships. He followed Wacker to Texas Christian University, where he was an assistant coach for seven years and an offensive coordinator in 1990 and 1991 before jumping with Wacker to Minnesota. DeBesse inherits a team that went 5-6 last season, but returns 19 starters, including IO on offense. Southwest Texas is a member of the Southland Conference.
