Writer AUSTIN About million Fox television viewers could miss a little thing called the Super Bowl as the net work and Time Warner Inc play a big game of chicken The companies are busy pointing fingers at each other and warning foot ball fans and cable viewers in Austin Tampa Kansas City Mil waukee and Detroit to dig out their rabbitear antennae Time Warner owns cable systems in those cities Fox in fullpage newspaper ads run Monday and Tuesday says Time Warn er is forcing it to turn off local sta tions in those markets on Jan 1 because the cable operator wont rene gotiate contracts for access to the local stations Time Warner says Fox is threatening to cut off the signals because Time Warner isnt carrying the networks allnews station in New York I think that viewers should be very very clear that if the Fox signal disap pears at midnight on Jan 1 it will only be because Fox forced us to do said Michael Luftman a spokesman for Time Warner While the companies are blaming each says Fox asked Time Warner Cable to negoti ate a new agreement Time Warners response has been to file a We at Fox are very hopeful that a new agreement can be reached so that programs will be JimPlatt a spokesman for Fox par ent company News said the ads are meant to get viewers involved Its to let the viewers know whats Platt said Maybe the viewers will have more luck getting Time Warners Luftman says Time Warner filed a lawsuit in Florida to force Fox to abide by two contracts between Time Warn er and Fox He said the contracts run through 1999 and dont need to be renegotiated One of the contract says Time Warn er will have access rights to network owned stations at least through 1999 Time Warner says that contract applies to the five local stations in question because Fox recently purchased them from New World Communication Group But Platt said Fox should be com pensated for access to the stations He said the Fox network is a valuable asset and Time Warner should pay some thing for it He said Fox isnt necessarily looking for channel space for its news station or for cash payments but wants to negotiate a fair deal Luftman said Time Warner com pensates cable networks for
