New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - December 11, 1996, New Braunfels, Texas Herald-Zeitung □ Wednesday, December 11,1996 □ 3A I Parents get briefing on new scheduling system at NBHS By DENISE DZIUK Staff Writer Parents gathered Monday night at New Braunfels High School to hear an explanation of the new 90/60 schedule for the high school and the steps that will be taken to have it in place by the beginning of the next school year. High school administrators, teachers and counselors met with parents to explain the new plan to parents. Interim Principal Karen Simpson said the new plan requires students to take four block classes and three traditional one-hour classes over the course of the school year. This will give the student seven credits per year, compared with eight credits under the current system of four 90-minute classes. Simpson said core classes, such as math, English, social studies and foreign languages, should be available in both class formats. “We’re going to try as hard as we can to let the students have the classes they want in the format they want,** Simpson said. Simpson said the changes will take effect during the 1997-98 school year, and students should have their schedules in hand by the end of April. Part of the registration process will depend on an intense training session for. the high school faculty so teachers can help students make their schedules. “We have to have them versed on the process to do what .we said we would do, and that’s provide every student with a more personalized registration,” Simpson said. Superintendent Charles Bradberry appointed a committee to look at the accelerated block schedule at the high school after receiving complaints about long gaps between core classes like English or math, the pace of classes and the effect of extracurricular activities. The committee devised a plan that combines elements of block scheduling and traditional hour-long classes. The New Braunfels Independent School District Board of Trustees approved that plan last month. Supplier to get look at future’s water needs By DAVID DEKUNDER Staff Writer SATTLER — Canyon Lake Water Supply Corp. customers and board members will get a sneak preview this afternoon of their expected water needs over the next 25 years when the board reviews a Tran-Texas Water Program water demand study. The study is part of a region-by-region assessment of state water needs for the next 50 years. The CL WSC board of directors meets at I p.m. today at the water supply office at 130 Kanz in Sattler. Larry Fuson, an engineer with Hogan Engineering of Dallas, will bring the board up to date on the progress of the Trans-Texas Water Study. The Texas Water Development Board is conducting the study. Dale Yates, CLWSC general manager, said the non-profit water supply corporation would submit its study to the regional Trans-Texas Policy Management Committee in February. Yates said he believed Fuson would discuss the projected water demands for the region, especially for southwestern and western Comal Other items on the agenda include the water supply corporation’s tariff, a document that will include rules dealing with CLWSC’s operation and administer charges for its services. Yates said the new tariff would make CLWSC’s operations better in the long run. “It will put us up to speed for future developments,” Yates said.
