New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - December 10, 1996, New Braunfels, Texas Santa corn meal oatmeal flour shortening sugar jelly candy peanut butter bread Turkey ham eggs salt fruit yams corn peas pork & beans It is that time of year again for what has become a tradition in New Braunfels -The Herald-Zeitung "Cheer Fund." When the Cheer Fund began fourteen years ago, our objective was to share our good fortune and provide a Christmas dinner for those who otherwise would not have a good meal. Thanks to the generosity of of the community, the Cheer Fund has provided nourishing meals to more than 2,000 families during the past thirteen years.    \ I * As in the past, a goal has been set of200 families. Every penny \ of your donation goes toward purchasing the baskets of food. All administrative costs are paid by the Herald-Zeitung. Donations are deposited into a Cheer Fund savings account in a local bank. Local grocery stores submit bids for the food. The lowest bid is paid for with a cashiers check from that account and any excess monies remain to draw interest for the next year. The grocery store furnishes sacks or boxes, volunteers from the store, Herald-Zeitung employees and members of our community donate their time and energy to pack the baskets. Distribution of the food has been made by members of the National Guard\ local fire departments, civic clubs, employees of the Herald-Zeitung, and concerned, caring citizens. The Community Service Center acts as a clearinghouse, providing names of the needy recipients. They also collect toys and gifts for children of those families. Often those are distributed when food is delivered. Many of the volunteers have walked away with a tear in their eye, after seeing the delight in the eyes of a small child who didn't think he or she would get anything for Christmas. We will accept contributions at our offices at 707 Landa Street. Please make checks payable to the Herald-Zeitung Cheer Fund. Names of the contributors will be published daily. Arrangements for pick up of donated items can be made by contacting Circulation Director Carol Ann Avery, 625-9144, ext. 228. ;
