New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - December 1, 1996, New Braunfels, Texas Herald-Zeitung □ Sunday, December 1,1996 □ 9A Wassailfest gives city that Christmas spirit j There's no better way to catch the holiday spirit > than by enjoying an evening of music and wassail in downtown New Braunfels. More than 200 talented musical groups will perform downtown from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday — celebrating the fourth annual Wassailfest. f There will be everything from bell choirs to | barbershop quartets, from choirs to dancers, from i bagpipes to Mariachis to German music. Stroll • from business to business (there will be more than ‘ SO wassail stops and open houses), sampling I wassail and listening to the strains of Christmas I music in the clear December air. Groups will \ perform at various times in 17 downtown locations. In addition, several merchants will have their very own special music inside their stores. Pick up your program and map at any merchant downtown that evening or at the plaza. Guests can collect stamps from various businesses in order to vote for the best wassail and enter for great door prize packages. Mr. and Mrs. Santa will be available for photos at the Hinman House on Caste!! Avenue. A special sneak preview of Glowfest — set for Dec. 14 and 15 — will be a hot air balloon display at the plaza, illuminating downtown like a beautiful Christmas ornament. Catch the wassail bus, courtesy of Bluebonnet Motors, to go from one end of downtown to the other — or take an old-fashioned horse and buggy ride or hay ride through the streets of New Braunfels and feel the hometown spirit. The Brauntex movie theater will have a special holiday showing of “Miracle on 34th Street” (new version) for the kids — and chaperone service will be provided by the Rotary Interact Group frqm New Braunfels High School. Cast your vote at 8:30 p.m. on the plaza for the best wassail and be eligible for a great variety of door prize packages. As you depart from the plaza, the courthouse bells will ring out the holiday chimes. Contact Lynn Fountain at 608-2100 for information. (Submitted by the Main Street Department)Military Notes r Navy Lt. Cmdr. Brian A. Mcllvaine, son of retired Navy Capt. ;and Mrs. James W. Mcllvaine of New Braunfels, recently repotted for duty with the submarine Precommissioning Unit Connecticut, based at Groton, Conn. Mcllvaine’s new assignment is an example of how Navy and Marine Corps men and women are assigned to ships, squadrons and shore commands around the world. Whether serving in the Persian Gulf near Iraq or in the Adriatic Sea near Bosnia, people like Mcllvaine are making a difference as they work to improve their knowledge and skill as part of the most highly technical naval force in history. Mcllvaine earned his diploma in 1980 from New Braunfels High School. Mcllvaine is a 1984 graduate of U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md., with a BSEE degree and a 1985 graduate of The University of Texas at Austin with a MSEE degree. Marine Pfc. Charles D. Chilldres, son of Ken and Leslie Brothers of Bulverde, recently completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, San Diego. Chilldres successfully completed 11 weeks of training designed to challenge new Marine recruits both physically and mentally. He is a 1996 graduate of Lake Dallas High School of Lake Dallas, Texas. Reach for a Star aims to bring holiday to needy The Christmas season is upon us. This means a time to celebrate the birth of Jesus, give thanks for the year past and the year ahead. A time to spend with family and friends. Also, during this time children anxiously await the arrival of Santa Claus. But unfortunately there are those children who wouldn’t have a Santa or dinner on Christmas without the help of “Reach for a Star” and other organizations in the community. Reach for a Star is asking that community members reach out and help give local children a Christmas. This-can be done by dropping off new or used toys at Red McCombs Universal Motors, or taking a star off of one of the trees at Wal-Mart and purchasing a gift. Church or school groups could volunteer their time and earn some community service hours by helping to wrap and deliver to those in need. Reach for a Star will be wrapping and sorting starting at IO a.m. Dec. 21, and will deliver to families in need starting at noon Dec. 22. This will take place at Red McCombs Universal Motors. Those who would like to volunteer, make a cash donation or have any questions can call Randy Kasberg t 629-9387 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Corbee after 5 p.m. at 608-9406. There is nothing more rewarding than to see the smile on a child’s face when presented with a gift.
