New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - November 29, 1996, New Braunfels, Texas 6A Q HeraldZeitung g Friday November Church Lite To talk with interim Managing Editor Jim Denery about Church Life call 6259144 Ext 21 Church Dont let Thanksgiving end without thinking about its purpose It is the day after The turkey longed for yesterday as it basted through the morning has become a mere carcass The meringue that topped the lemon pie has wilted from the edges and become gummy The last of the television parades has thankfully ended And we will not have to endure another THANKSGIVING SPECIAL for another year But oh the leftovers Growing up the day after was the day for hot turkey sandwiches My mom would toast bread and spread two pieces out on a plate Next came the turkey dressing and gravy The final touch was cranberry sauce spread across the top My my Now that was a leftover How about you The day after can be a strange mix of enjoyment and letdown After all today is also the beginning of the Great Shopping Binge My theory is this With all the football someone thought up a way for wives to punish husbands for ignoring them the entire day before And so will the weekend go More and more secular society has captured one more of the Churchs holy days But this one unique to American Christians should be held tightly and not be let go Why Because the very purpose of the day was to celebrate the goodness of God There was no other agenda given and none other taken The previous winter death had visited time and again at the pilgrims settlement They buried one after the other a total of 47 through the arduous Dennis Gallaher Guest Column winter The colony had been decimated by spring but with the spring came friendjy Indians who gave the pilgrims the necessary secrets of planting the new crops of the New World Thanksgiving was not only the name of the day it was the attitude of the heart toward Godwho provided And so it should be for us throughout this season of celebrating Gods very best So this weekend will progress as it has for years For many it is the first fourday holiday in a long time and with the cooler weather it is sure to be enjoyed more than most But what of the thankful heart What of the attitude of gratitude that is the great hedge against the cynical materialism of the day Let me give you a hint as to how to combat it Go to church this Sunday Dont give God the leftovers of the weekend but give Him the first fruits of the new week Sunday is not the end of the holiday it is the beginning of the week Dont choose this week to take a holiday from worship because thanksgiving to the Father is always in order Celebrate the beginning of Advent with your family Begin a new tradition If you are not familiar with Advent traditions go to one of the two Christian bookstores in town and get an Advent devotional to read through for the month Instead of reading the toy catalog with the kids read the story of how God became man Remember this is a working weekend for your pastor Chances are he or she spent Saturday preparing the Word for the Sunday morning table When was the last time you thanked your pastors for the giving of themselves in ministry be a good weekend to show your gratitude Dont be done with thanksgiving yet In fact let it begin the Season that we are so thankful for Dont be robbed and cheated by the cheap trinkets of the world More than 70 times the scriptures tell us to give thanks with a grateful heart to the Lord Psalm 106 states it well Praise the Lord Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is good For His mercy endures Blessed be the Lord God of Israel from everlasting to everlasting And let all the people say Amen Praise the Lord So from my home to yours have a great Leftover But dont stop Because our Father always prepares fresh grace for each day Look closely if you want but you wont find any left overs on His table of blessing Dennis Gallaher is pastor of the Freedom Fellowship Church in New
