Her own leadership abilities earned E I i 7 a b c t h Castillo the op portunity to meet other leaders on a national scale The New BraunfelsHigh Elizabeth Castillo School junior and daughter of Lupe and Josie Castillo was chosen to attend the National Young Leaders Confer ence in Washington Oct 2227 In keeping with the theme of the conference The Leaders of Tomor row Meeting the Leaders of Elizabeth was able to meet key lead ers newsmakers and state and gov ernment officials Highlights of the program included welcoming remarks from the Floor of the United States House of Represen tatives and a panel discussion with journalists at the National Press Club The leadership activities were var ied and creative In one such exercise Elizabeth and her peers roleplayed the President members of the Cabi net and representatives from Capitol Hill responding to an international crisis involving Russia In the Model Congress Elizabeth was part of a caucus that had to argue for English as the official lan guage Through the mock process she learned about passing bills mak ing amendments and working with students across the United States According to Elizabeth one of the most important gains she made from the conference were the friends she made from all over the country She is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America and the Spanish Club and is active in the Youth Ministry of Sts Peter and Paul Catholic Church The leadership con ference is spon sored by the Congressional Youth LeadershipCouncil a nonprofit non partisan educational organization Founded in 1985 the council is com mitted to fostering and inspiring young people to achieve their full leadership potential Elizabeth will be recognized at the Nov 19 meeting of the New Braunfels ISD school board Meet the Teachers Throughout the school year Meet the Teachers features educators who are new to New Braunfels Independent School District Carlinda Perez earned her bachelors degree in Communication Disorders from Southwest Texas State University She is earning her education certification through the Region XIII alternative certification program and teaches Special Education Resource classes at New Braunfels High School Greatest pleasure in teaching The greatest pleasure in teaching is to see a student succeed I love to hear a student say Thank you I understand how to do this now Or Thank you I passed the test I also like to see a student develop a high Philosophy of education My philosophy of education is doing whatever it takes to see a child succeed Every child can learn no matter how low his or her is Therefore if a child is not learning the teacher should reflect on what he or she could do differently It is the teachers responsibility to give the child an opportunity to learn and succeed in every way Sue Phillips has a Master of Education degree in Physical Education with a minor in Guidance and Counseling from Southwest Texas State University where she also earned her bachelors degree in Physical education with a minor in History She holds certification in special education and midmanagement administration A teacher of 20 years she teaches physical education at Carl Schurz Elementary School Greatest pleasure in education The greatest pleasure in teaching is being with children My elementary students are truly remarkable little Teaching them and watching them grow is the only reason to be in education I should mention that I think learnmg is often a twoway street Many times I learn as much from children as I teach Philosophy of education My philosophy is that all children can and should be successful learners They all learn at different speeds and in different ways but they all can learn Teachers should be continually
