New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - November 3, 1996, New Braunfels, Texas HeraldZeitung O Sunday November a 5A If you can cast a ballot others can gain from your experience Tuesday is Election Day The Comal County Senior Citizens Center is pleased to offer a voting place for Precinct No 1 It is an important day Please vote it is your privilege and duty At this particular time when it is so important for allpeople to think carefully and intelligently to take responsibility and to redefine their values I am reminded of one of my favorite poems from childhood This was a poem that my father could and did quote often He wanted us children to be the best we could be I hope we havent disappointed him There is a poem that has always had special meaning for me but it has taken me many years to understand and to hopefully have accomplished some of the values and responsibilities put forth in this poem I read it as a child I read it as an adult The message is the same I attribute a great deal of understanding to life experience and a great deal to the people Ive known I have learned something from everyone in my life some negative and some positive but I like to think as we grow older we grow wiser 1 cherish the people throughout my lifetime who have helped me leam a lesson or a truism or perhaps just the ability to understand and to forgive If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you But make allowances for their doubting too If you can wait and not be tired by waiting Or being lied about dont deal in lies Or being hated dont give way to hating And yet dont look too good nor talk too wise i If you can dream not makejjg dreams your master If you can not make thoughts your aim If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two impostors just the same If you can bear to hear the truth lLANE BRYANT r 0 t r I rll you ve spoken Twisted by knaves to make a trap forfools Or watch the things you gave your life to broken And stoop and build em up with wornout tools Marie Dawson Guest Column If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn ofpitch andtoss And lose and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone An so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them Holdon If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue Or walk with Kings nor lose the common touch If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you
