New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - November 3, 1996, New Braunfels, Texas HeraldZeitung O Sunday November O 3A express concern about plans for Spechts Crossing By DAVID DEKUNDER Staff Writer A proposed lease for a public access point at Spechts Crossing on old Spring Branch Road is awaiting the signature of a property owner Comal County Commissioners Court approved a lease last week with George Beere for the development of a crossing on Spechts Crossing on the Guadalupe River The lease is for 8 acres and could include a road turnaround fence and a location for picking up and dropping off rafters and tubers Property owners who live near the crossing have expressed concern that the proposed landing which would be an intake area for people to launch or recover water craft would bring troublemakers into the area County Engineer Tom Hornseth said it may take a month before Beere makes a decision on the lease The lease mentions the development of a landing Hornseth said The proposed name of it is Nichols Landing which is apparently a family name of Mr Spechts Crossing which may have been used for more than 100 years is a favorite among tubers and rafters who use it to get into the Guadalupe River The county barricaded the crossing and closed the road to it two years ago after building a high bridge upstream on new Spring Branch Road During the rafting season the crossing had been known as a haven for drug users troublemakers and drunks who trespassed on private property and camped at the spot Property owners and residents expressed their concerns at a special Comal County Water Oriented Recreation District meeting held at the Spring Branch Volunteer Fire Department on Wednesday night Property owners complained to WORD members that it gets so husband bought their property because of her husbands health She said she does not like what is going on at Spechts Crossing People come park and camp Walenta said The garbage there is bad People who come out there know were the houses are We came out here and paid good money for this We dont need Paul Lindemann said the crossing has attracted such riffraff that he does not let his young daughters go down there by themselves He said two teenage girls once came running to his door because two drunken men had frightened them and would not allow them back into their car I dont want my girls down there unless there is a way to control Lindemann said A fulltime law enforcement presence is needed at the crossing to deter trouble during rafting and tubing season Lindemann said Residents also said accessibility for law enforcement authorities needs to be addressed because the parking congestion at times has made it hard for deputies to get their vehicles down to the crossing Other property owners wanted the area to be shut off to the public but Hornseth said the county would have a hard time doing it Since the new bridge was built with federal funds one of the conditions of the agreement was to maintain public accessibility to the crossing Hornseth said back out hitmailboxes and damage jj vi Carol Walenta said she and her LASDA
