moved to save poppy The American Legion Auxiliary in order to protect the memorial poppy from the inroads of commercialism adopted a national poppy program at th e tS t 5 P Convention in 1924 That eiirninatecli the commercial poppy Poppy Days sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary Comal Unit 179 will be observed on Nov 8 and 9 Among many other things October is known as Clergy Appreciation But 1 would have to that of all the comments shared with pastors across our land over the past several days this quote stands alone It is unique because of its sincerity and absurdity The Lord has blessed me with the privilege of ministering with a very gracious and loving group of people I do not anticipate Clergy Appreciation Month in hopes that someone will acknowledge my existence and efforts and make me feel that it is all somehow worthwhile The reason for that lies in a wonderful relationship between Pastor and Congregation where mutual love respect and appreciation are known and felt all throughout the year instead of being saved for some special This Sunday was again no exception in spite of the fact that it was a little busier than the usual Lords Day Our Annual Congregation Meeting was held for a few moments following Morning Worship Service and our Hallelujah Carnival for the youth and children was held during the afternoon as an alternative to trickortreating So for me in addition to all the usual pastoral I observed and took part in the various carnival games horseshoe contest horseback rides a clown and magic show and a cookout for the church families As part of the afternoons activities I was to share a brief devotional with the children As I was standing at the grill cooking the burgers and hot dogs my sweet wife Tina came to me and said They are ready for you to bring the devotional The children are in the front room and theyre getting restless I quickly grabbed my stuff and hurried to the front building where 1 was ushered into a room packed with people waiting to yell Surprise Happy Birthday Yes in addition to all the above activities Sunday was my the big 40 Honestly that was the best surprise party Ive ever had Hats Off to all who had a part in planning and preparation Our oldest son had also decorated my office in grand fashion earlier making it very hard to even get to my i appreciation shown trie moments that followed will always be dear to my heart It seems that the hugs and comments shared came from deeper within the hearts of the people and was received in a much more meaningful way because of the way our busy momirig began V Our phone rang early arid whert Tina answered I could tellby her reaction and facial expressions that something was wrong We sometimes get those kind of calls you know But this one was different One of our elders was calling to see if everyone was all right at our home When Tina assured him that everyone was just fine he replied Well then someone has played a big hoax in the paper because there is an obituary stating that Rick died It was hard to believe that this was actually printed so we quickly grabbed a paper and sure enough there it was The name of the church that I pastor was wrong but the list of survivors and date of birth were correct Was this some evil act of vindication or someones idea of a practical joke One very troubled caller telephoned the church early Sunday morning with the question Would someone please tell us whats going on Please allow me to share what I believe has transpired in these past few days I believe with all my heart that someone felt that this would be a great way to tease me on my birthday and so therefore faxed this information to the newspaper purely as a hoax I do not know of anyone who would intentionally hurt another in this way Unfortunately 1 do not believe this person or persons foresaw the farreaching effects it could and did have on my family my church family and many friends Rick Bartlett Guest Column within our community Though I am not comfortable with the fact I realize that many people hold a special bond with their pastor I frequently remind my parishioners that there are no nailprints in my hands I am merely a and that I am not to be placed up on some pedestal as being incapable of sjn They know and understand this but in reading my name and the names of my family in the obituary section of this Sunday morning paper there were many who were shaken to the core to put it mildly The numerous phone calls that transpired throughout the day Sunday and Monday reflected many varied responses to the publication These responses ranged from calls of sympathy and offers to help to questions of its authenticity all of which ended in feelings of anger confusion despair and bewilderment My heart goes out to all who have been this incident and I am especially sensitive to our brethren at the Tree of Life Fellowship as this touches so closely with the recent passing of their beloved pastor I know for some this was the worst possible joke that could ever be imagined Again it is my heartfelt belief that this was nothing more than an attempt to get me on the occasion of my 40th birthday Unfortunately not only many been troubled by this but the HeraldrZejtunghas been stung in the worst possible sense This hoax was faxed into their office and they had absolutely no way of tracing it or of ascertaining its authenticity Certainly the Herald has learned some valuable lessons as have we all What have we learned Well if you think my Sunday was busy can you imagine how my Monday was As I returned home Monday afternoon I met my wife in our study having just completed another phone conversation Please allow me to quote her as we embraced I am so glad that when you you stayed around to help me deal with this because I realized that if you HAD died and left me just now hard it would be to deal with Wow What a reality check for my whole family Can you understand why we hold each other a little tighter today than we did yesterday We ate one of those blending and this has definitely brought our hearts a little closer The numerous phone calls from our church family other churches neighbors little league coaches business and medical professionals have been overwhelming We have learned how blessed we are to have so many good friends Our children bless their hearts were comforted by their friends and teachers at school learning too that good friends are indeed a blessing from the Lord We are certainly blessed to live in such a great community Thank you New Braunfels I pray that by someones mistake we can all Icam that practical jokes sometimes arent as funny as we might think and that the repercussions might be very serious and harmful Lets learn too that mistakes DO happen in even big mistakes like this one And when mistakes happen lets learn that it is better to forgive than seek revenge I appreciate the promptness of the HeraldZeitung in contacting me early Monday morning once they realized what had happened They have been very direct with their apologies to me my family our church family and our community as a whole I appreciate that dont you Are there other lessons to be learned from this Perhaps you can think of some Ill leave you with these thoughts Concerning Clergy Appreciation if you are blessed to be a part of a loving church family and have a good pastor who Ibves you and cares for you and preaches the Word of God faithfully dont wait for some special occasion to give him a hug or pat on the Why dont you call him right now and let him know that you appreciate him Then keep reminding him of that all through the year If you dont have a church home and a pastor you know you can call on any time of day of on you Go find one And speaking of appreciation you know the holiday squeezed in between Halloween and Christmas theres another special moment when we do things we OUGHT TO DO every day of the year Weve learned a lot through this and I more lessons awaiting in the days to come But for today I am thankfiil to be alive I am thankful for my wonderful wife I am thankful for my six tremendous children Thats no mistake on this I said SIX I am thankful for the high calling of ministry and for the opportunity to pastor such a loving church family I am thankful to live in New Braunfels Texas And I am thankful to the HeraldZeitung to have been given this opportunity to express my thoughts to you Rick Tina Bartlett Chris Jerome T J Bartlett Erin Alison Garrett Moore R E S T A U R k GIFT SHOT Daily
