Winder about Sports Day call 6259144 ext 24 o r n I cl Z o i t u n g Sports Pay B1 Comal County Sports Lit i1 Area teams win to stay in playoff hunt By DAVID WINDER Sports Editor The Canyon Cougarettes came back from a 62 thirdgame deficit to claim a 154 715 151I win over the Del Valle Brahmas Tuesday night at the Cougar Den The win pulls the Cougars 159 5 2 even with the Brahmas 146 52 for second place in District 284A It was a major win for Canyon coach Donna Boehle said The first game we came out and played flaw less It was gorgeous every thing was going right It was just awesome The passing was gorgeous and the serving was But just as great as the Cougars serving was in the first game it turned that bad in the second You cant win making seven ser vice Boehle said You put yourself in a hole That gave them the momentum going into the next The Brahmas built a 62 lead in the third game But the Cougarettes were able to regroup to gain the victory following some inspirational words from Boehle I asked one of the players Why are you frustrated Boehle said Then I asked all of them if they would rather play with frustrated players or ones that are upbeat and positive The upbeat and positive Cougars then outscored the Brahmas 135 to take the match Cheryl Dunn had the Cougarettes best disposition taking ownership of the net in the third game to score sev eral key kills Dunn finished the match with 10 kills and four blocks Cheryl Dunn had a great Boehle said She came up with some thundering Marci Allen had 26 assists while Cali Courtney had five blocks pace in the District 284A race with a 154 157 win over Bastrop 26 Tuesday night at Ranger Gym Smithson Valley coach Margaret Mitcham hopes the Rangers win sig nals the end of the teams midseason slump We played much Mitcham said We still made some errors and stuff but overall we played well Were starting to get back in the groove Were not all the way back but were getting Mitcham said the big difference in the Rangers play last night and the last couple of weeks was their demeanor I dont know if it was pressure if we were just tense or Mitcham said But we started to have fun again Kellye Rogers led the team with six kills and 11 digs Sasha Homer and Christy Ballman both had blocks while Ballman handed out 18 assists Michelle Moore had four kills and eight digs for the Rangers The New Braunfels Unicorns 186 80 moved three games ahead of the pack in District 265 A with a 1512 15 12 win over San Antonio Lee It was just what we Fowler said Lee came out and played well They played good defense which is what we can expect for the rest of the Shelley Bredewater had 17 kills and 14 digs while Hayley Helmley had 30 assists for the Unicorns Yvette Vil lanueva has three blocks and Laura Bis sett had two aces HeraldZeitung photo by MICHAEL DARNALL Canyons Kelly Parrish and Ranessa Reeh celebrate a point A Reel Story GallOHaraPosplsll proudly shows v Inehredften s caught recentfy near Marker 37 on the Intercoastal Canal at North Padre Island She and her hus band Vladimir caught seven keeper reds four drum two large trout and more than 30 sand trout and croaker in two days of fishing Gale caught the fish using cut bait after running out of live shrimp When she hooked the big red it headed full speed down the canal and continued to peel off the line tt soon became apparent the fish was not going to turn around and there would be no line left on the reel So Gale had Vladimir haul anchor start the motor and follow the fish until it tired I know this sounds like a fish story but Ive got the fish to prove Gale said Sports greats should stay away from films David Winder Sports Editor Cowboys getting well quick By JAIME ARON AP Sports Writer IRVING Texas AP Michael Irvin will make his 1996 debut with the Dallas Cowboys this weekend Shante Carver makes his next week and Charles Haley could also be playing by then Soon after Jay Movacek could return And to top it off Emmitt Smith is finally feeling healthy No wonder coach Barry Switzer isnt too worried about his teams 2 3 start We can look to the future and see we have help Switzer said Tuesday Irvin will be in uniform in Sun days home game against Arizona It probably wont take long for quar erback Troy Aikman to find his kvorjte target likely triggering the cheers Jrvin yearns to hear once again Things have gone smoothly in practice for Irvin and Aikman They say their timing hasnt missed a beat Ive got to honestly say its like he was there all year Switzer said Irvin returned from his fivegame suspension in great shape He put himself through rugged condition ing drills during the free time he was stuck with following a soap operalike offseason 1 saw him yesterday go up about three feet off the ground spread out with that big wing span and with three defensive backs around him he just sucked in the Switzer said Kelvin Martin cant do Despite the positive jolt Irvin will provide Switzer warned that its not fair not to expect too much from one person I think we all have to realize that Michael back is a tremendous lift to us emotionally and talent I think we have to realize that Michael back is a tremendous lift to us emotional ly and talent Switzer Switzer said But if we con tinue to play the way weve been playing making dumb mistakes then Michaels presence doesnt help Penalties and poor execution not Irvins absence are the main reasons Dallas is last in the NFC East Much of the sloppy play can be traced to backups filling in for injured or suspended starters or to people playing out of position fact there was really no way of getting around it Im just surprised it took this long to get it together But on opening weekend Ill pay my money just to sec for myself what Ive been wondering about for years Can Michael Jordan act Later this month Jordan will make his big screen debut in the movie Space Reviews of the film and his perfor mance have been favorable but you can afford to take chances when act ing legends Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck are your co stars But thats what athletes have always done on the silver screen take chances Olympic swim mer Johnny Weis muller made a believable Tarzan by saying one word sentences and swinging from branches Former Heisman tro phy winner Simpson learned the acting trade on the set of The Naked movies then used that knowl edge to turn in the performance of a lifetime over the past two years The sad thing was he wasnt even nominat ed for an Emmy But isnt alone when it comes to athletes not being recognized for their acting genius Over the years many have tried bul few have been able to gain the status that makes people stop saying things like Hey isnt that Dennis Rodman playing an Amish And thats why spoils stars have to be really good actors If theyre not then theyre just playing themselves in an acting role When Robert Deniro acts he becomes that character While youre watching one of his movies youre watching a psycho not Deniro playing a psycho When youre watching Reggie Jack son in a movie youre watching a guy who stumbles over lines and misses his marks but hits 500foot home runs Its not all the fault of the athletes Lets face it they havent exactly been in films or had roles that have awardwinning potential Jim Brown known as probably the greatest running back the National Football League has ever seen is reduced to being the black guy in the greatfilm The Dirty His act ing range consisted ofbasically run ning a draw play through enemy lines and throwing grenades down ventilation systems Wilt Chamberlain one of the great est NBA players of all time had one starring role in Cgnan the Destroyer with Arnold Schwarzneger Wilts duties were basically to look mean and hit people when Arnold started having trouble He was able to do that without a hitch The films big problem was the pro ducers who cast Wilt next to Arnold The movies premise identifies Arnold as the strongest guy in the world but hes almost 2 feet shorter than Wilt and he doesnt seem to have bigger muscles Wilt would kill Arrioldin a fight Julius Erving the Hall of Fame for ward who redefined the dunk starred in probably the worst sports movie of all time The Fish that Saved I like Dr J a lot but he cant act the movie stunk and he had to star with Gary Coleman The only part that is believable is when the movie has Dr J do a series of dunks to really bad disco music with cartoons playing on the backboard 1 told you the movie was ter rible Ed Too Tall Jones an allpro defen sive end with the Dallas Cowboys plays an intergalactic bodyguard in one of the worst movies that I have ever seen although I cant remember its name Worth watching until the end though just to see Too Tall try to shoot a laser gun and act at the same time Karccin AbdulJabbar one of the greatest NBA playere of all time played Capt Roger Murdoch in the movie His part was hilarious but if you look real close you can see AbdulJabbars eyes moving to read the cue cards Hakeem Olajuwon one of the best players in the NBA today made a spe cial appearance in a dream sequence for a kid who one day wanted to play in the NBA The films producers got around Hakeems thick accent by not having him talk in the film That allowed Hakeem to exploit his greatest acting lalent smiling and nodding with the best of them Deacon Jones a I lull of Fume defen sive end once was a guest star on an episode of The Brady He spent the first half of the show teaching a junior high football team how to be tough He spent the last half of the show defending Peter Brady because he is in the glee club In real life Deacon would have had the other kids use Peter as a tackling dummy David Winder in the sports editor for the HeraldZeitung
