New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - June 21, 1996, New Braunfels, Texas .Travel Information — Visitor Information Center *4 ’RAVEL INFORMATION — VISITOR m INFORMATION CENTER mThis sign notifies travelers a Travel Inf oration Center is available ahead. The center rovides directional and travel time informa- on. ■During the Christmas holidays of 1971 my usband Jeff and I, and our new-born daughter essica traveled to Abilene, Texas, to visit my ster and her husband. I The plan was to travel on to San Antonio to isit Jeffs parents for New Years. We decided > leave Abilene in the early evening, thinking Eat traveling at night would be easier with a eepy baby. ■We said our goodbyes about 8:00. As tanned, Jessica fell asleep quickly, and I fol-:jwcd. I awoke to ask Jeff, “Where are we?” He cplied, “In Abilene.” I thought, I must have just dozed off for a few linutes. Some time later, I awoke again to ask eff, “Where are we now?” I thought I was reaming when Jeff laughingly replied, “In abilene.” ll awoke the third time about 10:00. As I leepily gazed out the car window, I thought the highway signage looked familiar. I asked, “Are we still in Abilene?” Jeff sheepishly admitted, “I've driven around this city three times now, and I can't figure out how to get off this loop “K*onto the interstate.” I ,V<; 7^ boldly asked, “Have you vf ' “V    ? • stopped to ask for direc- tions?” “No! I think I vrV' “ - ' '' V;7 ■ almost have it figured ~ <' 7* I . • ■ out,” was his response. Finally, about 11:00, on our fourth loop around the £.'t- *'$ , '' 71 * • scenic city (and at this pas-senger’s insistence), we stopped at a Travel Infor-mation Center ^station) and were graciously given a few simple direc-I    dons, which we followed, and zipped onward to San Antonio. Our three-hour delay in arrival had caused Mom and Pop some anxiety, but foe excitement of seeing each other (especially their new grandchild) obscured their concern. Only later did they inquire about the reason for our delay. I sat quietly grinning as Jeff mentioned Ire had a little trouble getting out of Marty Lindley Abilene. To this day, whenever either of us recognizes we need some guidance, we remember how hard it seemed to “get out of Abilene,” when really it was relatively simple once we admitted we needed help, stopped to ask some-orre for direction, and ob^ed foe simple instructions given at the Travel Information Center. Today, almost every state has Travel Information Canters located on major interstate highways (Interstate IO or Interstate 35). Sometimes tire travel information is provided in written form by pamphlets or maps neatly displayed on kiosks (free for the taking). Sometimes it is provided verbally by friendly people familiar with the roadway system who patiently show you the correct route using a wall map. It is wise to write down these detailed directions, so when you are back in the driver's seat, and your focus is interrupted, you have a written reminder. Directions can also be deciphered by using various resources available just by asking for help. Tire starting point (and often most difficult) is admitting foe need for direction and acting wisely and efficiently once received. Arriving at our desired destination is contingent upon our implementation of the correct knowledge. This past year I have studied a book entitled Samuel. The book is divided into two parts with a total of 55 short chapters relating details of the life journey of a man named David. His journey begins as a shepherd boy selected to eventually be a king, and ends with his approaching death after a 40-year reign. He seldom, if ever, traveled any part of his journey half-heartedly. His disobedience of God's instructions plummeted him to the pits of failure; his obedience flung him into the epitome of success. His journey has an integral thread of consistency; whenever David recognized he needed help, he stopped and asked for directions. His Travel Information Center was God This characteristic caused David to become known as “the man after the heart of God.” God always responded to David's need The instructions were written or verbal; sometimes the itinerary was so detailed David not only knew the stops and events, he knew the exact destination point More often, he received “step by step” instructions, not knowing the outcome of each step until it was taken, or the final destination point. I Sound familiar? Stop. Ask. Start Arrive, Each step taken in faith. Who is your Travel Information Center?^ Where are you in your journey? “Circling- ( around Abilene” relying on your own (fisori-* ented efforts, almost ready to give up and ask? for help? Maybe you have asked for help,-;} received the right instructions, but you just. a I haven’t started Or maybe, today you are experiencing “a joyful arrival.” Relish it, wallow in / ; it, be thankful. For today's moment of arrival* , * will pass and tomorrow another trek in yow., journey will begin. When you roadway is unfav \ miliar, when you are expending time and effort.> J without success, STOP at foe ultimate Travel*' » Information Center, ASK God for instructions...: !
