Loop 337 North Real bonding on Food and Lodging Next Exit This road sign informs the traveler the next exit leads to food and lodging facilities Childhood family vacations usual ly began when my daddy would get home from work on Friday afternoon The six of us would pile in the white 51 Mercury and drive under the instruction to spot a sign that read 4 Hamburgers for a Then my dad dys response was Lets see if we can find a sign that reads 6 Hamburgers for a At first everyone would be enthusiastic about this effort to save small change then as late afternoon grew into early evening and hungry children and adults became increasingly irrita ble to each other Daddy would finally exit the highway and pull into a 4 Hamburgers for a fast food stand The last hours of this game were filled with four kids expressing the usual complaints Hes touching She looked at Shes on my Dont slug so My mothers repetitive Ray I told you we should have stopped at the first And finally my daddys massive arm reaching wildly from the front seat recklessly aiming at anything in the back seat that was above MbWleyel We would all duck and most of the timeino targets were hit Wow what a beginning to a family Real bonding occurred Even as a child I remembered question ing why every family vacation had to begin with this fool ishness Why did my daddy always think there was some thing better ahead instead of accepting what Was right in his face The obvious provision for his family As for lodging The quest was tp drive all night sleep along the roadside in the car for a brief time and on we would go to our final destination arriving just in time for Daddy to crash for the next eight to 10 hours while we enjoyed being with my grandparents and cousins Even if lodging was offered by friends and relatives the objective seemed to be to complete the trip without having to accept the hospitality and help of others Wherever I pray the 23rd Psalm I think of this simple illustration and wonder how often we respond to Gods pro vision in a similar manner Read the following phrases and compare what God desires to give you with what you are willing to graciously accept 1 The Lord is my Shepherd I shall not Want 1 We are to want what He provides for us no more no vacations 2 He makes nx He down in green pastures 2 He knows our unsatisfying nature therefore He must 3 He leads me beside still waters 3 Yes there are times VTIKII rnmill US mWUK MM WaVCSy butHe knows when we need nothing but still waters so we look deep into life and reflect on our journey It is often harder to be still to reflect and wait in trust than to charge forward and fearlessly face the future 4 He restores my soul 5 He leads me in paths of right eousness for His names sake 6 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow Of death I fear no evil 4 5 6 Sometimes we feel like God is trying to kill wipe us to lead us in the wrong way not the right leave us for the enemy to to remove God just wants to enhance us to repair renew revitalize revive the good in us so the enemy will not defeat us so we will courageously take the right path when we do walk through the valley of the shadow 7 for Thou art with me Thy rod and Thy staff they com fort me 7 His discipline and direction should be a comfort to us not a cause for confrontation 8 Thou a table before me in the presence of my enemies 9 ThbU anointest my head with oil my cup oyer i our journeyis filled with battles from within when all fronts are battle fronts when we awake to despair without a sense of direction and doze off in defeat God says sit down at the table I have pre pared for you I will intercede and bless you I will give you direction I will make your life overflow with joy 10 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days ofmy life 11 and I shaUdweU in the house of the Lord forever 10 11 God promises to fill our lives with good if our desire is to have a relationship with Him throughout our journey So when God places the FOOD LODGING NEXT EXIT sign along your roadway what is your response Do you graciously stop and sit at His 4 Hamburgers for a S table and relax in his Green Pastures lodge Or do you refuse His offering of refreshment and restoration selfish ly continuing down the road until exhausted defeated and joyless and you finally accept the Masters direction for your journey Marty Lindley is
