At present, tourist season peaks between mid-June and md-August Estimates of the tourist influx ink) New Braunfels rai^e from 500,000 to I ndbon ar more. It’s a lot! But to be conservative, it is better to use a low estimate since it is seasonal, can vary substantially md concentrated in the ired-June to mid August period. Using I percent, the estimate would be 5,000 tourists at peak season. lf all the numbers ave added together (11.200 seniors + 11 JOO workers + 5,000 tourists), the ridership potential would be 27,400 people per day during the mid-June to mid-August period and 22.400 year-round. Has number does not include nuddle-schoolcrs, stay-at-home parents or other parties who might take advantage of the bus system Again, to be safe. estimate on the conservative side and allow for aO kinds of reasons and conditions why people might not take the bus, it would be wefl to exclude 99 percent of this number. Sa if only I percent of the potential ridership rode the bus every day. there would be between 224 and 274 total one-way trips taken (I percent x 27,400) and that would keep the buses fiUcd to better than half their capacity. How ridershq> can grow from 15 one-way trips per day on average to 224 and upward toward a capacity of 400 is under review by a transportation task force with recommendations expected shortly. Though an infant system, it may wen need to move from a crawl to a dead ran. Stay tuned! (Lynn Fountain is New Braunfels Main Street director.) la fee first aine weeks of the New Braunfels trial transit system, ndcnfep appears to be low . but compared to what? A look at some numbers may help. Over the nine weeks. N-Bus riderafep has averaged 91 one-way trips per week. or 15 one-way tnps per day. Fare revenue has totaled S489-76i To assess wheeler this is good. bad. reasonable or unreasonable (this is a rune-week-dd system, an infant by any sanded), numbers md data need to be converted lo usable information. For example, what x the physical capacity of foe system? Is the population of the city and its makeup large enough to take advantage of a transit system? Does the design invite ridership? Are actinides and needs suffidot to support a transit system? The physical capacity of the system ts two 20-passenger buses making, under foe present design. IO trips per day. and stopping at 62 bus stops. In theory then. IF each bus were filled id absolute maximum capacity for each of the IO runs, forte would be 400 one-way trips per day (two buses x 20 passengers each x IO runs per day). Are there enough people who need or want the trans-pratatson to fill the buses to capacity? More numbers: The population of New' Braunfels is currently estimated at 32.000 people. Of this total seniors and disabled are estimated to make up about 35 percent, or 11.200 people. Mrnomcs and smgle-car working families are estimated to make up between 35 and 42 percent of the population, or joathemwooo hardens Native Designs and Consultation • Perennials • Herbs • Native Plants • Aquatic Plants • Antique Roses • Soils & Bark Mulch Bob Fitzsimmons, Proprietor Those on duptay will be Aunt bra's Bcd and Breakfast, a garni home in foe Blue Waters sub-rvtsaou, a bachelor's home in the ive Odes subdmsKXL a boney-toon home in the Village West ■bdmsioo and the Fox home rn artier built by World War ll iermau POW*.
