fellow workers calling the telephone company and ordering service for his new house Hello telephone company Id like to order a telephone line for my house Can you tell me how much that would be Yes yes I see Well let me ask you a question When I get my new phone line in will I be able to order a pizza with it This conversation probably sounds a bit odd to most of us today because we understand what it means to have a connection to the telephone com pany Of course once we get that connection we can use it to order a pizza if that is what we want to do A connection to the Internet can be viewed in a similar light Once you are connected via an Internet Service Provider you are connected It is then up to you if you use it to track the stock market or to call one of your friends located in a sub freezing climate to discuss how great life is in New Braunfels To review last week we established the differ ence between Internet Service Providers who provide a direct connection to the Internet and Online Services like America On Line The benefits of the Internet Service Providers are centered around speed and full accessibility to the Internet Online Services have the advantage of being able to provide resources that only their subscribers have access to Another advantage of the Internet Service Provider channel is the amazing array of software programs that allow you to take advantage of your direct Internet con nection by passing audio signals video signals or database queries along the network this week we will continue the explanation of the differences in Online Services and Internet Service Providers To every rule there is an exception So I must point out the exception to the above rule of complete Many times in a corporate environment a fil tering computer known as a firewall is placed between the corporate network and the Internet This can be done to protect information on the corporate network from the Internet as well as providing a method of filtering or censoring parts of the Internet from the users on the corporate network On a smaller scale individual computers can be controlled with filtering programs like NETNANNY or SUR FWATCH which allow parents to set restrictions on the areas of the Internet that are available as well as monitoring the information that is coming in to their computer Another benefit of being on the Internet is stan dardization Once you get all your winsock applica Reed Hemly lions installed they will work with any direct access to the Internet There may be a few configuration issues that need to be changed between services especially in the dialer program The main point is the applications that do things on the Internet will still work the same way Another benefit of the Internet Service Provider is cost Prices for a commercial provider can vary from state to state country to country and company to company But about per month for unlimited access is somewhat typical My thanks and acknowledgment to the author of Mastering the Internet which I used as a reference for this article The entire text can be found at This docu ment provides more than 200 pages of Internet help in plain English It includes explanations of Internet mysteries and complete setup instructions for Win dows Windows 95 and Windows NT I highly rec ommend it as a must read for diose of you that are cruising onto the information highway Reed Helmly is a South Texas Computer Con sultant far CqmpuVision and the Webmaster for Reed lives in New Braunfels and specializes in computer networks and Internet service
