New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - April 7, 1996, New Braunfels, Texas Herald-Zeitung O Sunday, April 7,1996 O 3 AChamber to hold membership drive The Chamber of Commerce in Texas continues to be the largest coalition of business development in Texas, and the last week of April has been designated as a time to recognize the impact of some 562 separate chambers of commerce. Locally, the Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary association of businesses, professionals and individuals working to build a healthy business environment, promote development, and work effectively to improve the quality of life in New Braunfels. Each year, the chamber tailors its activities to reflect the needs of the community. Members volunteer their time to serve on specific committees and task forces, which may be ongoing or short-term event oriented. Currently, there are 41 chamber committees and subcommittees with specific goals. The Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce membership drive will be held April 17 and 18. Approximately 60 Blue Coat volunteers and prospective Blue Coats will call on businesses to tell them about the advantages of being a chamber member. (Submitted by the Greater New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce.)School calendar makes no sense Editor, I wish to thank Mr. Thomas Billie and Mr. John Clay for their recent votes against the calendar that CISD will follow for the 1996-97 school year. Again, the CISD has decided to take two breaks in the second semester. This time the first break is only 23 days after a two-week, one-day Christmas break. I have to ask WHY? The CISD Board voted five-to-two to accept the calendar, with the above gentlemen voting against accepting the calendar. Mr. Clay even presented a fourth alternative calendar, but is • seemed as though the board already had its mind made up. As I have stated before, two breaks in the second semester make no sense in the warm South Texas climate, as they do in the North where there is in inclement weather. The first week-long break, just 23 days after the long Christmas break, has the students returning to school to finish the first six weeks and face six-week tests. Is this fair to the student who has trouble learning what is being taught? No, it is not. But the school board saw fit to make it so. Also included in this calendar is the fact that it was based on the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo timetable. This break is placed so to allow students to participate in this event. It is funny how none of the many San Antonio THE AROMATIQUE BATH by IROMATIQUE Th© Creator of Decorative Fragrance The Aromatlque Bath... I ask, is it necessary to make the calendar around this event? Students in any of the San Anto-nio school districts participate, they participate under FFA and are not penalized by the school for missing school. Many people who live in Comal County work for both San Antonio school districts and the New Braunfels school district, which do not have two breaks in their calendars. It would be family oriented if CISD could place its break to coincide with the other school districts. But at last year’s calendar meeting, the assistant superintendent stated that they did not want all of the children off from school at the same time. By doing this, the children of Comal County are unable to take advantage of the two theme parks that we have nearby during their breaks. These two breaks also cause financial hardship in families where both parents work. During these breaks, young children have to have care, and cannot be left home alone. Full-time day care is VOWERS • WEAPO expensive. I do not know of many families that can take two vacations in the second semester as well as vacations during the summer unless they are well-off. Another item to look at is that TAAS testing takes place shortly after returning to school from the first break. Again, I ask, is this fair to the student who has trouble taking tests? It may be with the amount of time that is spent on preparing for the TAAS test, teaching the teaching the fundamentals of education suffers. The calendar which was chosen has school ending May 30, with no Memorial Day holiday. Many families look at starting their vacations Memorial Day weekend to avoid crowded resort areas where Northerners are later in the summer. These are five additional days that are not needed for school if there is only one spring break. The students would be out of school before Memorial Day, and the CISD would not face losing federal and state funds due to absences of students. Also, the teachers would not have a Saturday work day. I’m sure this item is very popular with the teachers. The other thing with one spring break that is the same as what the San Antonio and New Braunfels school districts are taking is that families who have members working in both districts, like Superintendent Dr. Jerry Major, is that they can both enjoy the same time off. Also, if there are any sports activities scheduled during the CISD two breaks, our students and administrators would be able to enjoy a peaceful and relaxing spring break with other family and friends who iv in one of the other districts. I urge the CISD to look serious y i t creating a calendar for the 1    -9 > school year that will have o i.; jne break, and allow families to hav 3. ne off together, and place a minimal burden on the families with small children needing day care during these two breaks. We pay a lot in school taxes, let’s not make us pay more than necessary for our children’s education by making working parents pay for two weeks of day care. Leonard O. LeBlanc Jr. Garden RidgeOn« happy customer Editor, How do you say “Thank you” to a dedicated group of professionals who are so giving of themselves. When I have made requests of our County Sheriff to investigate several matters, I have received quick, courteous and efficient service. When so much negativity abounds about government services, our county law enforcement can certainly boast that quick dunking and appropriate action are their trademarks. What a delight it is to live in New Braunfels. Thank you Sheriff Jack Bremer and your dedicated staff. JoAnn Aniol New BraunfelsSee more Letters on Page 5A.
