rescued the damsel in distress and successfully used a dialer program to connect to the Internet For those of you that actually read the arti cle last week you know that is only partially true In reality this article will compare Online Services to Internet Services without mention of melodramatic theme Examples of Online Services include Com puServe America On Line and The Microsoft Net work These Online Service Providers do just what their name implies they provide an on line service of their very own When you dial into one of the Online Service Providers you can take advantage of their electronic mail to send messages discussion forums to exchange information and many other services These services are only available to their subscribers Another service that the Online Service Providers offer is Internet access Generally they do a fair job of doing this The service is usually a bit slower and the user isforced into using the set of programs pro vided by the online service Many times the service is restricted to only a certain subset of the informa tion available on the Internet Internet Service Providers offer a direct connection to the Internet There are numerous advantages and a couple of disadvantages associated with this type of connection Lets look at these in detail Internet Service Providers offer their users a choice of a vast number of tools to interact with the Internet and take advantage of its resources When using e mail the online service provider would give you their email tool and you must use it When using a Internet Service Provider you can pick from many different tools that are available with a variety of features to send and receive Internet email Win dows 95 users can use the mail interface that is built right into the operating system One of the most popular mail products for Windows or Macintosh com puters is Eudora Mail made by Qualicom This mail software follows our Internet software pricing model well They offer a freeware version that is yours for exactly that or they offer their Pro version for In true Internet fashion these can be down loaded with the click of a mouse from your favorite web browser application A quick search of the web provides links to about a dozen other mail products There is no shortage of choices when you use a Internet Service Provider Another benefit of an Information Service Provider is that you are truly ON the Internet You can do any thing that the big boys can You can cre ate web pages visit other peoples web pages go shopping in the electronic mall login remotely to oth Reed Hemly er computers and much much more Another big benefit is speed With an Internet Service Provider you have a direct connection to the Internet You do NOT have to go through an accessing service which gets you onto a service that has thousands of other users using it and then get through their Internet gateway to the Internet The Internet Service Provider lets you login to their host computer which can take you very quickly to a line with very high bandwidth The time that most people spend waiting on the Internet is many times attrib uted to waiting for a response from the remote com puter So much information So little ink Next week we will continue the explanation of Online Services and Internet Service Providers We will also soon be forming a Internet users group so we can share our information with other interested folks in the com munity My thanks and acknowledgment to the author of Mastering the Internet which I used as a reference for this article The
