New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - March 31, 1996, New Braunfels, Texas 10 A O Sunday March 1996 Club Notes Joyce Kolodzie and Dolores Schumann with the live oak planted in Landa Park New Braunfels Garden Advisory Council In an Arbor Day observance cere mony held Feb 15 in the Landa Park Arboretum Dolores Schumann and Joyce Kolodzie were honored by the Garden Club Advisory Council Board sponsored by Comal r Garden Club with a tree live oak ded icated to them and each was presented with a certificate of recognition for their many years of dedicated work for the Landa Park Arboretum Dolores Schumann was honored for bringing the idea of creating an arbore turn in Landa Park to her garden club in 1981 and has created an awareness of the many species of trees growing in the Landa Park area serving on the Landa Park Committee since 1981 as chairman or cochairman preserving Founders Oak Tree in a commu nity wide effort she wrote the new Harry Landa SelfGuiding Tree Trail and Growing Guide which contain descriptions and growing conditions for 57 trees helped raise funds for the new brochure helped to acquire a grant to conduct a tree inventory in Landa Park and who has planted 20 trees in the arboretum to releaf the arboretum in the last year and who maintains a watering program to maintain a living library of Joyce Kolodzie was honored for being a chief participant of the arbore tum committee since 1981 for her on duty work in the Landa Park Arbore tum helped raise funds for the markers the new brochure and was instrumen tal in the creation of the trail map which was surveyed and marked by her husband the William J Kolodzie Surveying Company and her effort to save the Founders Oak and for her interest in ecology Dolores and Joyce are members of Guada Coma Garden CJub The Arbor Day celebration is a pub lic awareness observation of the need to plant trees and is a coordinated effort by the New Braunfels Garden Advi sory Council Board the Arboretum Committee and the New Braunfels Parks Department The program is in compliance with the requirements to maintain our Tree City USA desig nation New Braunfels being one of 34 Texas cities to be named a Tree City Jan Kennady member of the Comal Garden Club was the Arbor Day Chair man and master of ceremonies Jean Harris Chairman of the Garden Club Advisory Council Board and president of the Comal Garden Club welcomed the guests and participants The Honorable Paul E Fraser Mayor of New Braunfels read the Arbor Day proclamation and declared Feb 15 as Landa Park Arboretum Day Barbara Perry ViceDirector of Dis trict VII East Zone and Comal Garden Club member gave the Arbor Day his tory Bill Schumann horticulture consul tant and retired Comal County Exten sion Agent guest speaker praised the Garden Clubs of New Braunfels for their community service for more than 60 years by planting trees in parks schools plaza highway intersections and community buildings tion of Linda Schlather principal the ceremonies closed with refresh ments served by the members of the Comal Garden Club VFW ladies Auxiliary The Ladles Auxiliary to Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7110 pre sented
