New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - March 28, 1996, New Braunfels, Texas Herald-Zeitung □ Thursday, March 28,1996 □ 3 Archives Anonymous AA-96-026 By MICHELLE OATMAN JOHN MOLER, photographer Special to the Herald-Zeitung March is our series of Weiss photos, and we have had very good responses to all our pictures this month. (AA-96-024), our boy scouts from last week, were identified by Robertta Mueller, Margaret Parr, and Dr. Fred Frueholtz. The photo was taken on the steps of the Seele Parish House. The young men are; first row (1-r) Jack Bergfeild, Othmar Stratemann, Bobby Harry, Nowotney, Edgar Sahm, Benard Schultz. Second row; Rev. Bassler, ?, Claude Platz, ?, Ogden Eikel, Norman Henne, August Geissen. Third row; ?, Carl Marion, Bob Herring, Fred Henne, Harvey Nebergall, Elmo Fisher, ?. “The Aeroplane” (AA-96-025) did not receive a full identification but...Laurie E. Jasinski of San Marcos came in and gave us a full history of the plane and the pilot, Joe Sanders, her grandfather. Joe Sanders served many years in the American Legion, Comal Post 179. He worked as a mechanic at Dittlinger Mills. In 1929 he built an “airplane,” which was equipped with a motor and could be driven under its own power. It could not fly. The plane was used an interesting promotional float for the Legion Post. According to the local Legion Minutes of September 30,1929, plans were made for the Nov. 11 Armistice Day parade. The “aeroplane” was to lead the parade. The plane was covered with wire mesh in order to attach red paper poppies as decorations, after the parade the poppies were sold for a quarter each. As an added incentive to buy, some poppies had hidden one, five, and even IO dollar bills. The money was raised to benefit the American Legion. We must give a big thank you to Laurie Jasinski for the wonderful history on such a great picture! (AA-96-026) is a group in the park.
