New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - March 27, 1996, New Braunfels, Texas HeraldZeitung O Wednesday March O 5 VERBALIZE THR Three thousand years ago Solomon knew what molecular biologists cur rently contend Our words determine our destiny Here are just a few of Solomons thoughts on the subject The tongue has the power of life and death and those who love it will eat its fruit From the fruit of his lips a man enjoys good things He who guards his lips guards his life Reckless works pierce like a sword but the tongue of the wise brings heal ing If words are the most powerful des tiny shaper that we control and they are then by governing the words that come out of our mouths we can have a better chance of having a ful filled life Positive brings prosperity Let me give you two examples Sev eral years ago I became disgruntled with the socioeconomic direction of our country I began to write poiso nous columns filled with invective and innuendo Everything was bad Our politicians The legal system Society The evolving medical system I stopped getting letters praising my column Instead complaints poured in Worst yet I began to believe my own writing I became a sour puss I began to feel as bad as my columns Finally I real ized that people enjoy reading my columns for the same reason I get pleasure from writing them they are positive uplifting encour aging Writing about the ills of society did nothing to stop the I was hurting myself I started writing John L Walker about the good life I began to feel bet ter Movies provide a good example Threefourths of movies are Rrated Threefourths of the profits conic from G and PGrated movies People crave inspiration not degradation What does this mean for you Leam to see something positive in everything that happens Speak hopeful words Never miss an opportunity td praise others Find and speak the good in every situation Show appreciation at every opportunity Encourage the timid Fortify the weak Similarly speak only good about yourself You whether you know it or not are a child of God God doesnt make junk God doesnt like for you to talk badly about what He has made He wants you to think and talk good about yourself God is a positive force not a negative one Those who talk negatively speak against God Those who talk positively speak for God Believing in ourselves talking positively about ourselves doesnt mean that we believe in nothing else Selftalk is not designed to detract from our faith Positive selftalk enhances our ability to serve Use positive selftalk to become all that you can be and help others to get the most out of life Positive selftalk builds you up and in turn helps others Sell yourself on yourself Remind your self at every opportunity that you are a firstclass person A friend who has fought the hard fight against pessimism and cynicism says he has gained greatly by reading the following affirmation that he calls his 10second pep talk three times daily I lead an enthusiastic patient life I am a full provider for my wife I am a loving father I am a friend to all Every day I bring encouragement joy and hope to all that I meet I get my eyes off myself and onto others I lead a healthy lifestyle I eat moderately and exercise regularly I develop a joyful funfilled playfulness at work and Write and speak your own positive pep talk and reap the power of the spoken word Affirm the positive Program your brain for success by Work at a fair wage hard to find Editor In response to your editorial in todays March 24 paper and all the other news reports about Gov Bush backing taxpayers paying for the schooling of children of illegal immi grants you said you agree and cannot blame a man for illegally entering this country to get a better paying job for himself so he can support his fam This strikes me as compassionate but grating because of my circum stances My husband and I who were bom in the area moved back here in January I have excellent skills and have been trying to find a job here I was offered a position as innkeeper at a local estab lishment I could not accept because they wanted me to work 65 hours a week which was OK with me but at a salary of which is per hour and illegal I mentioned this to the lady and she got very guess she thought I had turned her in to the Labor Board because I gave her the name and phone number of the man I had spoken with She told me she would check into it and let me know something but she never called me back Please inform your readers that just because they offer someone a salaried position does not mean they can underpay them They still have to pay minimum wage and timeanda half for any hours over 40 Maybe this will also show that just because some one tries to get a job over here does not mean they get a betterpaying job I most businesses are not like that particular one but we shouldnt even tolerate one company doing that As for me I will keep looking for that good job here in New Braunfels a little longer 1 figure if I havent found one in the next 30 days I will regret fully go to San Antonio Dee Dee Real New Braunfels Dont forget your vote counts Editor The March 12 Republican and Democratic Primaries have come and gone but voters we still have deci sions to make before the general elec tion in November Both Comal and Guadalupe County primaries have resulted in a number of uncompleted races requiring runoffs Unfortunate ly only a small percentage of our eli gible voters will return to vote Dont let that happen Remember that your vote is just as important in these stillcontested races as it is for the same races during the primary Why Because your runoff vote will decide whether your original efforts to make a change or to keep the status quo are successful Go to the polls and make your voice 9 1996 v Early Voting April 15 1996 Let me also remind you that as a registered voter whether you cast your vote in the primary or not you are still eligible to vote in the runoff Tom Tannehill Seguin Why not recycle old build ings like the LCRA Editor The following comments are in ref erence to the article about restoration of the old LCRA power plant by Betty Lou Rushing in the March 3 edition I fully agree with Betty Lou that this structure provides for some wonderful opportunities and deserves all of our consideration We should have learned from the obvious mistake that San Antonio made in the demolition of the Arena without due consideration We are learning the advantages of reuse and recycling Why not apply these ideas to the restoration of this structure Louis Charlie Millicam California student interest ed in New Braunfels Editor We are doing state research reports in my class and I will be reporting on Texas The reports are due in May and cover topics such as statehood history and interesting facts The reason 1 am writing a local paper is to ask if you could publish my letter in your paper 1 am hoping some of the members of your community would write to me mesabout their history of thejrlife in Texas Hive in Southern California and am sure many things about New Braunfeis are dif ferent from where I live Also if any of the citizens find time to reply it would be great if they would enclose a copy of my published letter Thank you so much for taking time for my request TriCounty Carpet Sales Installation can you set about correcting it We have a crime problem in our county and the incumbent Sheriff has even acknowledged it but he says we should not worry that we have a higher crime rate than our neighbors in Bexar Hays Guadalupe Kendall and Blanco counties The incumbent states we are not really like our hill country neighbors instead we should compare ourselves to Galveston County because we are more like them Galveston County has a population of nearly four times that of Comal County Galveston County has an unemployment rate of nearly double that of Comal County Galveston County has nearly eight times the number of residents receiving some form of welfare or assistance I do not believe it is practical to compare our county to Galveston County in an effort to explain our current crime problem I believe I can accurately identify the problems at hand I also believe you can too Please vote for me BOB HOLDER for Comal County Sheriff in the Republican April 9th Bob Holder Early voting begins April 1st and runs through April 5th at the Comal County Courthouse only Paid political announcement Bob Holder 923 Hollyhock New Braunfels Tx 78130
