GODLEY Sports Editor The New Braunfels out of sevengame slump by taking two wins in three games on Friday and Saturday at the Belton High School Baseball Tournament Its nice to get back on the winning said New Braunfels coach Neal Miller We needed a few good games to get our confi dence After falling to Granbury 93 in the first round the Unicorns came back to beat Cop peras Cove 75 Copperas Cove led 51 in the sixth inning when New Braunfels mounted a twoout sixrun rally to take the lead Sopho more Josh Salge earned the win In the third game on Saturday pitcher Aaron Moore hurled a shutout over Brownwood as the Unicorns exploded on offense in a 100 victo ry Shannon Thayer and Grant Hill made the alltournament team The Unicorns collected eight hits in each win Ruben Perez led the way against Brown wood going 2for3 with two RBI Chad Wehe had a double with bases loaded in the third inning Also at the tournament the Canyon Cougars beat Temple in the opening round 74 then lost to Killeen in the second round to set up a game with Granbury on Saturday for third place The Unicorns play in an alumni game on Tuesday at 7 at NBHS Canyon takes on Austin Reagan on Monday at 6 in Austin The play at third Cougar powerlifters make state From staff reports i v members of the Canyon Cougars varsity x ve lifting team competing at the regional meet Lot Fresnos on Saturday qualified for state John Flores Robert Blankenbeker Orlando Mesa Kurtiss Schmidt and Mike Broaddus earned a place at the state meet on March 2930 at the University of Houston Canyon took third place in the team competi tion with 27 points coming in just behind Rio Grandes 28 and Tuloso Midways 30 In the 198pound weight division Flores took first place by lifting a total of pound in the bench squat and deadlift events at regionals It was Flores personal best lift Blankenbeker was also first with a lift of in the 181pound class Mesa Schmidt and Broaddus each earned third place titles Mesa lifted in the 198 class Schmidt lifted 920 in the 132 class And Broaddus got in the 220 class Taking fourth place was Dustin Maxwell who came away with in the 275 class Mark Noble was fifth in the 181class lifting Kevin Self lifted in the 198 class for fifth place Jason Hunt took sixth in the 114 class with a total of 670 CHS coach Dan Burk said the team capped a dominant season Im real pleased with the way the kids gave an outstanding Burk said Theyve worked hard all season to get to make it to this point They are going to give it their best at Las Vegas could be in cards for Astros HOUSTON AP The Houston Astros whose springtraining lease in Florida expires this month are consid ering Las Vegas and three other sites for the future owner Drayton McLane says The Astros have trained in Kissim mee for 13 years but their lease on Osceola County Stadium expires at the end of this month McLane is longritefnvdeaHn Kissimmee wherathe Astros Class A affiliate plays because he wonders if sagging spring attendance will always be a problem The park is in a bad McLane told the Houston Chronicle Its on the wrong side of town away from where all the action Osceola County officials arent so sure they want the Astros either Theyre currently in negotiations with the Baltimore Orioles and would rather have a northern or eastern team because that would draw more outroftown visi tors looking for a warmweather vaca tion McLane said Kissimmee remains a possibility but hes considering three other springtraining sites including Las Vegas The other possibilities are Tucson home to the Astros Class AAA affiliate and Jupiter where the Astros would share a facility with the Montreal Expos Were still trying to get something done with he said McLane has a major obstacle to over come if he wants the team to train in Las Vegas The Astros would need two or three other teams to join them there in order to make it to Vegas The desert city is too far from base balls Arizona training camps to make to have his shot at the WBC heavyweight title and indicated hell keep Mike Tyson and Frank Bruno out of the ring if thats what it takes Saunders on Friday refused to strip tonights title fight between Tyson and Bruno in Las Vegas of its World Boxing Council sanction but did issue an order prohibiting further fighting by the boxers What this court does not want is the winner to go out and sign a contract with someone else to fight Saunders said Lewis had sought a court order back ing him as first in line for the WBC heavyweight championship saying he earned it by defeating Lionel Butler in a WBCordered elimination bout last May However the WBC made Tyson the top contender after his release from prison last March which under its rules made him the mandatory challenger for the title While not trying to block tonights fight Lewis had sought in a hearing Fri day to force the WBC to drop its sanction of the event preserving his right to fight Bruno SEATTLE AP Playing without AllStar guard
