New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - February 16, 1996, New Braunfels, Texas 10 □ Herald-Zeitung □ Friday, February 16,1996Wheelsdi A4"Two special editions of lengendary sports car create a stir in automotive world Audi's A4, which first went on sale in the U.S. in September 1995, has drawn high praise from the European auto press as well as from the continents buying public. After its first six months on the German market, the A4 was sell-David    *n£ on a Par Wlt^ the g ll    BMW 3-Series and was mullens    outselling the Mercedes C-Class. Auto Bi Id magazine named the A4 its 'best ••ar,' and Auto Motor Und Sport magazine iftmed it the class winner when it compared sfrriilar Bavarian offerings. The British peri-*o5ical Car also declared the A4 a 'clear winner' jn'a comparison with the BMW 3-Series, and Auto Zeitung, a German weekly, called the IB 'perfectly built.' -*^The A4 is the successor to Audi 90. The 'A' inerts name stands for Audi, and the '4' refers to me mid-size platform upon which it is built. -TThc A4 is nearly two inches wider than the •fc&model it replaces, and the bloodline is an inch louver. The wheelbase is lengthened by only a Traction. -'•-The design of the A4 is characterized as a Jiving wedge profile' by Audi officials who 'say-'its low lines rise in an unbroken sweep, tiering as the roof meets the rear quarter in a strong, muscular display of German flair.' “-■The new shape of the car is permitted by technical advancement. The A4's unique multi-link front suspension requires much less vertical clearance, for tflfe^ance, than did the previous car's coil '^Jfring/shock absorber stmts. —The A4 has a 0.29 coefficient of drag, approaching today's practical minimum. tjpBut Audi has achieved that Cd without resorting to the standard aerodynarpic 'tricks.' r>nfTypically; for instance, an add-on wing would -be used as a spoiler. Audi, however, chose to Corporate that function into the trailing edge lithe trunk lid, which boasts a unique reverse -'■-iNot only is this attractive, but it also causes the separation of air flowing over the body to be pushed further rearward, a key to air flow man 1996 Audi A4 agement and the car's low drag coefficient. At the front, the car's new design includes larger silver rings, the Audi trademark. New slim profile headlight assemblies also house front fog lights. Door handles are aerodynamic and flush, and bumpers, side sills and protection strips are body colored as well. The A4 uses five-spoke 16-inch alloy wheels that complement the overall design. The cabin of the A4 offers a high degree of refinement and personal comfort, but it does those things in a very Teutonic way. Two inches have been added to the car's intenor width, providing mote elbow room and better dnver-to-passengcr spacing. Cabin length also is greater, and headroom has been increased by almost an inch. Enhancing the spacious impression of the car is its expanded greenhouse — the cabin area from the window line upward — which makes the interior feel more 'airy.' The A4's trunk space is greater not only than that of its predecessor, but also of its chief competition, the BMW 3-Senes and the Mercedes C-Class. Amenities that are optional on most vehicles are standard equipment on the A4. As an example, the A4's standard automatic climate control is so sophisticated that it uses a sunlight sensor to detect the angle and intensity of sunlight and then to compensate for its impact on the interior temperature. The design of the interior gives a 'wraparound' feeling. The view outside the car is nearly unrestricted and cockpit controls are logical and instantly accessible. Backlighted instrumentation includes a tachometer, oil temperature gauge, voltmeter, ambient temperature display and service reminder. The instrument panel itself is finished in genuine walnut wood tnm that extends rearward to the front and back door panels. Seats in the A4 are firm but comfortable and provide full support from the headrests to the thigh and lumbar areas. Audi uses dual density foam in the construction of its seats. Standard upholstery can be either a high quality facette weave cloth or perforated leatherette. As an option, Audi’s elegant Kodiak leather is available. The A4's standard sound system includes a cassette tape deck, eight speakers with active rear speakers, automatic volume adjustment according to vehicle speed, visual display of station format and call letters, rear window antenna and pre-wiring for a six-disc CD changer. Optional is an eight-speaker Bose premium sound system. Standard comfort and convenience features include a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, power windows with one-touch-down capability and, on the driver's window only, one-touch-down, eight-way power adjustable front driver's seat, cruise control, power mirrors, power central locking, key close feature for power windows and optional sunroof, folding rear center armrest with storage, two fold-out can holders, front and rear headrests, anti-theft alarm system with interior monitoring, and 60/40 split folding rear seats with individual locking. Anti-lock brakes are Audi fifth generation units. The system incorporates an electronic proportioning pressure system that allows completely progressive proportioning of the brake force to the rear wheels. This means the system can adapt brake pressure under all load conditions and compensate for varying dynamics involved in cornering situations. For 1996, the ABS system also offers electronic differential locking to provide low speed traction enhancement when starting off on very slippery surfaces. Pricing on the test vehicle was not available. (David Sullens, editor and publisher of the New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung, has written an automotive column for the past 11 years.)
