news During a conference call today Big 12 presidents were expected to review reports by professional consultants and take a final vote between Kansas City and Dallas Kansas Citys package was acknowl edged to be richer than Dallas when bids were given to a meeting of the pres idents on Nov 30 Many Kansas City backers however believe their best chance of keeping the conference post season basketball tournament was to let Dallas have the headquarters If I were one of the college presi dents Id think we made quite obvious ly a superior said Gil Bourke co chairman of Kansas Citys Big 12 reten tion committee I wouldnt know how my associates and I could turn them down But then I am also a realist and I recognize there are political issues I am probably not completely apprised The Big 12 will begin competition next August and has already signed foot ball television contracts worth more than million The 12 presidents had already been given copies of a report by Arthur Andersen consultants on the bids I have not asked people for their reaction to the information and Im not going to until said Iowa State president Martin Jischke chair man of the Big 12 CEOs I honestly do not know how the CEOs are reacting to Locating the headquarters turned out to be one of the most nettlesome deci sions Big 12 schools have faced since February 1994 when the Big Eight linked up with Southwest Conference members Texas Texas Baylor and Texas Tech Since then they have hammered out revenuesharing plans resolved a bitter dispute over academics separated their schools into two
