Students observe Martin Luther King Day On Jan. IS, the students of Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic School reviewed lessons in peace-making with a special liturgy and celebration of Martin Luther King Day. Students and their teachers, from pre-school to 8th grade, brought lighted candles to Brianne Marbach, the religious commissioner. Students and teachers made promises to keep peace on campus by caring and respecting their schoolmates. After the candlelight ceremony the students were given a length of ribbon. The ribbons were knotted together to “bind” their promise into a peace chain. The chain measured nearly 400 feet long and was knitted together to make a heart-shaped wall hanging. The children understand that throughout the school year if their peace promise is broken, they will have to untie their knot. This will symbolize the breaking of the promise. They are encouraged to make amends in order to retie and repeat their promise to keep peace and harmony in the school. Members of the Sts. Peter & Paul Student Council were instrumental in planning the celebration. According to Sarah Weber, student council president, “Students are very conscientious about their promises. They are quick to remind each other to be faithful.” Members of the Sts. Peter & Paul Student Council include Ray Gallagher, Maeve Goetz, Matthew Haas, Laura Henk, Austin Herring, Ashley Michael, Matthew Smith and Sarah Weber. James Weber serves as their advisor. Above: (I to r) Brittney Stevens, Camille Gueguen, Ray Gallagher, Amanda Gabois, Jena Hartman, Amy Biedermann and Megan Hungerford have made their peace promises. At right: Taylor Mosley gives her candle and vow of peace to religious commissioner Brianne Marbach.
