New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - February 2, 1996, New Braunfels, Texas 6 O HeraldZeltung O Friday February Church Life To talk with Managing Editor Doug Loveday about Church Life call 6259144 ext 21 Church Life WHAT To Do ON A COLD SUNDAY Texas is known throughout the world as the place for toughtalking individualism The place where the pioneer spirit is still alive and no one is afraid of anything And in most cases that still holds true Most but not all What brings Texans to their knees What can shut down the mighty cities of our state and have us all cowering around our televisions 5 waiting for the next news flash After today and yesterday surely you know Let get cold and wet and we push in the stops the state Texans just dont tolerate cold weather What we all begged for in August is we despise in February What we dreamed of in July causes wideawake nightmares today And its not our fault Were just not built for cold weather Our pipes freeze up our wells cant take it our animals cry our plants die and well we just take the day off But the media really reacts Texas news casters put cold weather on the same par as earthquakes in California In Chicago this week it was 50 degrees below zero Now thats cold We on the other hand scream foul when the dogs water dish freezes over The whole family has to assemble on the back porch to marvel at the phenomenon in Sparkys water dish And the media does a feature story on it at five six and ten But Ill tell you what really gets to me For some unknown reason all Dennis Gallaher freezing weather in Texas happens on the week end If its going to get really cold if there is an outside chance that it will freeze it will happen on the weekend And in my line of work thats not good Because some people will use any lit tle excuse they can to nix Sunday morning worship Priorities are never as clear as when the mercury dips Can you tell my anxiety level is rising as the temperature goes down I wouldnt make a doctrine about this but I wonder if cold weather had anything to do with the words to church members in the book of Hebrews not forsake the assembling of our selves together as is the manner of For some reason attendance was dropping off in that first century congregation A slow acting poison had been slipped into the church A poison that eroded the urgency of fellowship and the call to worship Whatever form it took whether it was cold weather or family time or worshipping God on the front nine of the Jerusalem Country Club the red flag came up in the heart of the leadership and they warned the people to not let anything interrupt the continual gathering of the saints together A lesson that our comfortdriven society has certainly forgotten And no one knows that more than the pastor of the local church that you attend How do I know Because we tend to think alike and Ill bet hes a little concerned about this Sunday morning too So decide now to encourage him by your attendance this cold Sunday morning Dont think he wont notice if youre not there Like every other person called to the shepherding trade he or she will dutifully count the sheep It just goes with the territory But more important than your attendance speak to your pastor of your personal appreci ation of their commitment and dedication Because rain or shine sleet or snow flood or drought they have faithfully brought you their best every week This article is a little short this week I dont have time to write anymore You see its going to be really cold tonight That means Ive got to get home and protect my family from all the dangers cold Texans can cause And besides its a great excuse to sit in front of the fireplace and watch all those special news reports After all thats what cold weath er is all about t Dennis Gallaher is pastor of Freedom Fel lowship Church in New Serving it up at CLUM Church Members of the Canyon Lake United Methodist Church are preparing to concoct the besttast ing period of 40 days to prepare for the death and resurrection of Christ This beautiful story the pearl of all parables as it is justly called was narrated by Christ to bring home to the minds of men the infinite immea surable mercy of God and His true fatherly love for all His children It was spoken in the first instance to the Scribes and Pharisees who objected to Christs friendly dealings with sinners These leaders of the Apposition who prided themselves on their external observance of the law would have no truck with those who were not like themselves and quickly condemned Christ for his familiarity with such peo ple Because their own hearts were narrow and con pride and prejudice they could not admit that the great big fatherly heart of God could find room for and give a sincere welcome to the errant children whom His grace had brought back to the home They would not therefore admit that the publicans and sinners and of course the Gentiles who were not only sinners but sin itself could be giv en a place in Gods messianic kingdom and rather than share that kingdom with those they so wrongly despised they chose to stay out of that kingdom and used all their endeavors to crush its founder and its foundations Christ who was God read their innermost thoughts and knew the wicked scheme they were planning against Him and His kingdom Yet being God His mercy was infinite and in this very parable He pleads with them to soften their hearts and make room for the prodigal brother therein The father in the parable entreats the elder son to come in and join in the welcome festivities for his lost absence of fraternal love will all be forgiven as the crimes of the younger son are forgiven if only the elder son will come to his senses as the younger son had done Many Pharisees were later touched by grace and did as Christ had asked them in this parable but the majority remained obdurate in their opposition to sinners and to Christ the Lover of sinners and the Conqueror of All of us are portrayed in this story we are either the elder or the younger son If we are the elder son and by the grace of God have managed to stay in our Fathers home and have avoided the more serious offenses against His law let us beware of any temptation to boast of this as if we alone deserved the credit And let us especially try to have a heart like Christ for the younger brother who is not so fortunate as we were Such a heart will not only not object to the joyful welcome home God gives the prodigal but it will do all in its power to get the prodigal to return home Had the elder brother in the parable true love for his father and for his broth Pastors were interested in hearing fromyou Send columns or other submissions to HemldZeitung Church Life 707 Landa Braunfels TX 78130 Rev Eugene OCallaghan er would he not have gone looking for the lost one But no he stayed comfortably at home minding his own Too many good people today are likewise so busy minding their own business their own salvation that they cannot spare a moment for the prodigals who are so much in need of help How often unfortunately does one hear He made his bed let him lie on or Let him stew in his own juice and similar unChristian expressions from the mouths of good people who think they are loyal children of their heavenly Father Yet the Father loves these prodigal children and is yearning for their return His true loyal child will do all in his power to save his brother and thereby bring joy to his heavenly Father Remember there is no true loyalty to God in the heart of him who does not truly love his brother If on the other hand we are the younger sons how graphically our state is depicted in this parable that desire for liberty that urge to shake off restrictions that longing for false freedom that claiming of the gifts of body and soul as ours to do with as we please when they are not ours the squandering of these gifts in a foreign land the waste of years of valuable life in pursuits that produce nothing but the bitter fruit of shame and regret Gloomy indeed though true to life is the picture of Gods prodigal sons while estranged from Him and black indeed their final fate if no helping hand were forthcoming to lift them out of the mire of sin But and here is where Christs portraiture is so con soling there is a helping hand The hand of Gods unlimited mercy is ever stretching out to lift up His fallen children and lead them home Prodigals we may have been but the paternal home is wide open to receive us back Gods mes sengers of mercy are continually calling us to stop and think and consider our perilous position Why should we be starving in an alien land envying the swine their good fortune whenthe road back lies open before us and all we have to do is to say I will arise and go to my The almighty and merciful Father will do the rest Rev Monsignor Eugene OCallaghan is pastor of Sts Peter and Paul Catholic Church in New Braun
