New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung (Newspaper) - January 24, 1996, New Braunfels, Texas Schlitterbahn has changed everything Deaf Editor Everything looks different I couldnt Wait to get back to my beautiful Comal River house after an exhausting time in trte hospital To lay on my couch and be able to see hear and smell the river I knew its magical power would remedy me whole Remember old Camp Warnecke the lifeguards the same year after Charlie Tomrnie Freddie Families would book their vacations at the same time every year Familiarity tradition The rapids Stinky Falls and who remembers the pits The point of ail this is What happened to the good old days As I sit oh my couch I see concrete pillars steel beams and an orange and white flag flagrantly declaring its col ors The sound of the machines has begun regularly at What is it you ask Construction for Texas largest water I feel like my front yard has become another attraction with more blue slides a certain reality Are there no restrictions set for more expansion more commercialization How much is enough At what price do we sacrifice for progress Am I so naive to think that some government entity could limit and regulate this HeraldZeitung a Wednesday January O 5 monolith Yes the river still runs My husband says when the trees bloom I wont be able to see whatever it is that is being built I know its there and every things different f Sincerely Vicki WimberlyMartin f New Braunfels Gift of land for Bulverde Senior Center appreciated Dear Editor A dream became a reality when the Bulverde Land Owners Association donated land on Cougar Bend to the Bulverde Senior Center The comple tion of the legalities and filing of the deed was a milestone The Bulverde Senior Center and indeed the com munity as a whole will benefit greatly from this gift Ron Friesenhahn a New Braunfels attorney handled the legal paperwork free of charge Tom Wat son a local architect has drawn plans for a building to meet the needs of Bulverde Senior Center and their many activities also at no cost to the center With a solid base and such generosity by these fine men and so many others in pur community our enthusiasm is evergrowing and we have many plans already in the making for fundraisers for our new building We are feeling very opportunistic and very grateful Lara Wurzbach Spring Branch Want to see an Idiot Look in the mirror Dear Editor The letter in the Sunday paper from Keeper of San Antonio was sure ly a case of the pot calling the kettle black San Antonio drivers are some pf the worst I have seen I have been cut off tailgated and have been given dis gusting looks and gestures because I cfioose to drive the speed limit Oh and as for open ditches in the road nothing compares to some I Have seen and had to dodge in San Antonio Seems to me it takes a real idiot to come from a big city with many more rude drivers potholes ditches road blocks traffic jams and criticize a small town for putting in improve ments If T J Keeper does not like our lit tle town of he or she can keeper self in San Antonio Joshua Kunkel New Braunfels City officials get a pat on the back Dear Editor It is hard to read a publication or see a TV show that doesnt have a comment on Americas dissatisfaction with Washington or government in general These articles and programs usually point out the waste and ineffi ciency in government and its inability to take care of the taxpayers needs We all take for granted the services that are performed for us on a daily our local government In New BraunFels the streets are clean we have wonderful parks and good schools the trash is picked up and recycled great police and fire protec tion etc etc But the area that impresses me the most is when I call down to the city to speak to someone about something that is important to me or for infor mation or just to complain about some thing and I always get an immediate response to the situation I doubt if I called Washington I would get an answer like I do at the local level specifically from Mike Shands the department heads and their staffs They are very efficient in view of the limit ed budget and difficulty of their jobs I have been very appreciative of the fine job the city performs for us every day and I think sometimes its so effi cient that we have gotten used to it and forgotten to say Thanks for a job well
