relatives and friends gathered at the home of Hertha Behrendt to help her cele brate her 102nd birthday which was on Dec 21 Two beautifully decorated cakes with candles or inscription reading Happy Birthday and 102 graced her dining table Sandwiches tamales cheese dip chips cookies and party snacks were served those attending as well as soft drinks and coffee Her party was hosted by Emmie Sahm and Babe Kunz both second cousins to Hertha Cohostesses were the two Sahm daughters Cindy Berg er and Debbie Rider Guests attending were Pastor Walter Lentz her visitation pastor a cousin Ruby Grobe assisted by James and Frances Ruley of New Braunfels Vio la and Stanley Kohlenberg Leatrice and Curt Saur Vera Smock Doris Hewell Stanley Bums Dave Kunz Franklin Berger Steven Berger Suzanne Berger D J Siegmund Ran di Rider Michael Sahm Clarence Sahm and Nelda Kubala Photographic coverage of the event was provided by Nelda Kubala of Leons Studio and a video by Suzanne and Franklin Berger Some guests presented Hertha with gifts of fruit baskets and other food items Hertha still cooks maintains her own household and even partially mows her lawn with a push mower Nate Avalos of Seguin was rec ognized on Nov 17 1995 at the Kny tex Service Award dinner at Gruene Mansion Restaurant Nate celebrated Nate Avalos is recognized at the Knytex Service Award dinner 25 years of service with Knytex where School is majoring in Agricultural Ser he has contributed in a variety of posi vices and Development at Tarleton tions During his 25year career with Kny te Nate has been a weaver operator a klnitter operator and a knitter fixer During that time Nate has seen many changes in products owners process ed and location Other award recipients and Knytex rhanagement joined Nate and his wife Lupe to recognize and celebrate his Katherina Gomez of New Braunfels received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Texas University Kingsville Commencement cere rhonies were Friday evening Dec 15 in the universitys Steinke Physical Education Center State Rep Irma Rangel chair of the State Higher Education Committee delivered the commencement address find urged graduates to respect the opin ions of others even if you dont agree with Craig Preiss a Tarleton State University student from New Braun fels was one of 64 students inducted during the fall 1995 semester into the Universitys Texas Alpha Kappa Chap ter of Alpha Chi the national honorary scholastic society Preiss a graduate of Canyon High He is the son of Ralph and Darline Preiss of New Braunfels Membership in Alpha Chi is limited to the top 10 percent academically of the junior and senior classes The objec tives of Alpha Chi are to promote and to recognize superior scholarship and those elements of character that maks for effective service Founded in 1922 the society has more than 300 chapters in 45 states the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico Alpha Chi represents the highest aca demic honor on any member campus and since its inception over students have been inducted The Texas Alpha Kappa Chapter at Tarleton was established in the fall of 1968 There are seven regions across the country and Tarletons chapter is a member of Region I which includes parts of Texas and New Mexico Susan A Carey of New Braun fels was among 393 degree candidates recognized in The University of Texas at Tyler summer commencement cer emonies Dec 15 Carey was a candidate for a in techindustrial safety President George F Hamm gave the commencement address and conferred degrees Dillon Buhl was recently awarded the rank of Eagle Scout Warren F Gafford Effective Jan Warren F Gafford was promoted to the position of plant manager at Albemarle Cor porations Houston plant Warren joined the Albemarle Corporation a global supplier of specialty chemicals and intermediates in 1966 and has held a number of supervisory positions at the Houston plant and in Baton Rouge La Warren is the son of Ila Mae Gafford of New Braunfels and the late Floyd Gafford Warren and his wife the former Lillian Schmidt are 1956 graduates of New Braunfels High School Beverly Lynn Trollinger Beverly Lynn Trollinger ated magna cum laude trom west Texas State University on day Dec 16 1995 with a BAAS degree in applied arts and technology 1 with a major in occupational educa tion with certification to teach She was chosen Outstanding Business Stuj dent for 1995 and was awarded the I most prestigious honor given to college J students that of Whos Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities Supporting her in her endeavor were her husband Alarj Trollinger and sons John and Adam Were Meeting New Braunfels Hermann Sons Lodge will meet Jan 7 af 3 Meat will be furnished Members bring covered dish All students interested in and scholar ships A group of local Aggies will also be attending to answer questions The New Braunfels Lioness Club meets at Ryans Steakhouse Monday Jan 8 at 11 Guest speaker Joyce Billingsley will present a book review The past presidents of the Eagles Auxiliary will meet Monday Jan 8 at Ryans Family Steakhouse at 6 Hostess Florie Busch The Captain James Jack Chap ter Daughters of the American Rev olution will meet Monday Jan 8 at on the second floor of the Education Center Building 430 W Mill St This will be a members only busi ness meeting with an election of offi cers delegates to state
