third round Sports brief Choke Canyon promises black bass crappie A big mystery that has existed for the past two years is where have all the crappie gone at Choke Canyon This lake located just outside of Three Rivers opened to the public in the late 80s and had promise as being a great reservoir for black bass and crap pie Although bass fishing has been spotty at times it seems like someone is always able to stum ble into a bunch of bass However the crappie have been virtually nonexistent Sure you hear an occasional ten fish stringer being caught but thats rare Prior to 1993 virtually anyone who targeted crappie at Choke limited out 25 per Keith Warren Choke Canyons crappie fishing was so good I was under the opinion that the fisher men couldnt catch all the fish in the lake That was up until the crappie disappeared in 1993 Then rumors started speculating that indeed the fishermen had overharvested the fish At that point the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department imposed a reduced daily bag limit for crappie at Choke from 25 to 15 per day Still I didnt hear of anyone catching a limit It got so bad that people slopped fishing for crappie Suddenly in the past couple of months the crappie have shown up Lots of them aver aging better than a pound each They are located in 20 to 30 feet of water suspended over trees at the mouths of major creeks as well as under the Highway 99 bridge Both live minnows and small ji seem to be working equally well The best fishing is at night using the Orig inal Fishermans Green Light This light is consistently working better than a white col ored light Saltwater fishermen know of this light The results are equally impressive in fresh water U you go to Choke Canyon odds are youll catch crappie But please practice common sense when it comes to keeping the fish Donl keep more than you will use We dont want to go another two years without crappie again Keith Warren is the host of The Texas Angler television show which
