New Braunfels Herald Zeitung (Newspaper) - December 3, 1995, New Braunfels, Texas Herald-Zeitung O Sunday, December 3,1995 □ 5 A Hospital, medical staff Dear Editor, I wonder if this community realizes how fortunate it is to have such a well-run hospital, with very professional doctors and nurses. My family moved to this wonderful community seven months ago. At that time, I was three months pregnant and my pregnancy was at high risk. My husband and I want to drank Dr. Elmore and the team of medical professionals at McKenna Memorial Hospital who saved my life and our new baby girl’s life. Without this team and hospital, our family would be minus a mother and a new baby sister. You might think, “Oh, really—they don’t know what they’re talking about,” but having experienced hospitals and doctors and surgery in California and Nevada, we see such a difference in die professionalism and the care given by the doctors and nurses. We thank God each day that we live here and found such a great doctor as Dr. Elmore and such a wonderful hospital as McKenna Memorial. Porn, Greg, Natalie, Danielle and Baby Linda Marie Drake New Braunfels Leave Bunker BL speed limit well enough alone Dear Editor, The speeders on Bunker St have gotten up a petition to raise die speed limit to 45 mph. A man came out and installed a traffic counter, by orders of some county official, to have reason to iqs die speed limits. The only place they can drive 45 mph is on this straightaway, the 6/10 of a mile on Bunker. The road beyond the railroad crossing is impossible to go that fast. All those people want is to drive fast on this straight 6/10 of a mile. This is political rhetoric and vote-getting politicians. I built my home in 1978 and die traffic didn’t come close to what it is now. I want to let the public know that politics is politics as usual. There are 7 residents on this stretch of road. And we deserve to have the same respect as the people who live beyond the railroad track. The counter was installed behind my house, toward the railroad track. The traffic of the four houses on Bunker St. before the counter would not be involved, therefore not being counted. Thankyou, Weldon Nance New Braunfels Ttagudy eased by caring residents Dear Editor, I lost my wife in the automobile accident at IOO Landa St. Oct 4,1995 (your paper had an article about it Oct. 5). Quite naturally, I was feeling hopeless and devastated yet your community gave me so much consolation and support which helped me so much. I could hardly believe it! Very shortly after the incident Pastor DeHaven, St. Paul Lutheran Church, came to me at the Faust Hotel to offer sympathy and prayers. He had Pastor Miller get word of what happened to my home and had my pastor in touch with me within another hour. Some more special, caring people were Craig Hollmig, Mr. and Mrs. Krueger, Mr. Blackman, Mr. Purdum and Candace, Lt. Wommack, Trooper Shea, the Doeppenschmidts, the staff at the Faust Hotel, the Plaza Diner, and many other fine people whose names I didn’t get. I’d like to offer to all of them and to your community my sincere thanks for your caring support of me on the worst days ofmylife. VU never forget you! J Sincerely, George Thorvaldson Palm Harbor, Fla. I Denial of Holocaust alarms -nm — rn — — -JU director or iitwim Federation of SA ; Dear Editor, The reaction of a few residents of your city to the teaching of a lesson about the Holocaust in New Braunfels High School is alarming. The Holo-• caust is a well-documented part of history. There is much to learn from it, and indeed considering the controversy and hatred that were aroused by these classes, there is much that we must learn from it. The curriculum that was taught in New Braunfels has been used widely in the public schools for alme* 20 years. It is highly regarded by educators and students. It certainly was not designed to instill hatred for Germans. Quite the contrary. The objective is to learn about the dangers of racism and unbridled natkxialisTi, to explore the consequences of political apathy, and to understand the methods that are used by extremist leaders to abuse their power and dehumanize their enemies. The study of the Holocaust stimulates Rodents to examine then own roles and legxnsdxlities as citizens and bunton hmm. Those who would like school* to teach a sanitized version of history to young people are misguided. For die sake of the future, students must understand the past. If injustice, hatred and intolerance had disappeared with Adolph Hitler, there would be no need to teach die Holocaust Unfortunately, that is not the case. For proof, one need only look at the anti-Semitic ravings of the historical revisionists who deny that the Holocaust ever happened. Maxine Cohen Jewish Federation of San Antonio Stud—it« —ks Information about Texas, Now Braun- Dear Editor, I am in the 5th grade at Hart-Ran-som School in Modesto, California. The lady behind this beautiful display is Anna Lee Hicks. Take a “moment” to walk around die Main Plaza and then phone her up (625-2385) and say, “Thank you.” The downtown area is really becoming more alive. It’s taken the effort of a lot of great working folks and of those that continue to volunteer countless hours as well, from die city manager down and throughout die city staff. One of those is the current Mainstreet director, “K.C.” Karen Crandall. Sadly, she is leaving New Braunfels as her husband has been made that offer one can’t refuse. So, as you make that walk about the Main Plaza, look at the work she has performed to make a positive contribution to the city, then phone her up too (608-2100), and say, “Thank you.” Good wishes, K.C. One of die really “classy” additions to downtown is the Walk of Honor pavers that surround the walkway of the Main Plaza. This is the brainchild of Joyce Where Do You Turn When Your Doctor Says “You need special care at home”? Hendricks. Like so many others, her work continues on this project The goal is to get a name on every paver. This is a wonderful way to give a lasting gift this Sesquicentennial Christmas. And it only comes around every 150 years. This is the time and a special way to celebrate your family, a teacher, or a friend. Phone up Joyce also (629-6180) and give her a ‘Thank you” and while you’re at it, order a lasting Christmas gift—a paver or two. At the lighting of the Main Plaza, the New Braunfelsers dial attended and participated really enjoyed themselves. That was apparent. There was a very special feeling in the air. The arrival of Santa was a magical moment for the children (of all ages), the food and drink Iud a more special flavor, and the music of the Canyon High School Band, the Comal County Community Band, Ed Kadlecek and the Village Band, Mariachi Rosie y Los Muchachos and the singing of the Barber Shop Choir made for a truly festive and warming experience. And, there are many more of these experiences still in the offing during this Christmas season in which one can be a participant. Don’t miss the downtown Wassailfest for more fellowship on the evening of Dec. 7 and for sure join in the Caroling on the Plaza Dec. 17. We live in such a unique city and because we are here at this very particular moment to celebrate the Sesquicentennial of its founding, each of us should grab the full measure of it for treasured memories. Give somebody a hug today. It’ll make you both feel good and keep the day going “right.” We wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! “In New Braunfels 1st Das Leben Schon, Y Es La Vida Buena!” Sincerely, Paul E.
