deserves an Oscar Never sugary or spoon fed his films are funny disturb ing and well worth the effort to digest By Richard Ashton Copley News Service Although Pulp Fiction was overlooked at Oscar time in favor of the userfriendly film Forrest it still stands out as the most provocative stunning shock ing hilarious engaging and dis gusting film of last year The smallbudget million movie swept America and broke all box office records for art films rak ing in over million Whether you liked it or not you couldnt ignore the brouhaha sur rounding Pulp And at long last it has arrived on home video Miramax Home Video has re leased two versions of the film on tape one in the TV panand scan aspect ratio and another de luxe widescreen version The widescreen edition is a major coup to film fans as director Quen tin Tarantino makes full use of his Panavision screen But there is a double dose of Tarantino being served up because he also stars in Destiny Turns on the being released by HBO Home Video Tarantinos career soared into the stratosphere with the release of Pulp His multiplesto ry line film won top honors at the Cannes Film Festival in 1994 be fore being released in the United States Despite a number of Oscar nom inations Tarantino walked away with a shared Oscar with writing partner Roger Avery for best screenplay Tarantinos first foray into films was as an actor with a small part in JeanLuc Godards 1987 adapta tion of King Lear which co starred Woody He spent the next few years working as a clerk in a Los Angeles video store In spired by many of the cult films that he loved he wrote his first feature Reservoir When Harvey Keitel read the script he agreed to star in the film which boosted its minuscule budg et The heist film that was heavy on violence and quirky dialogue was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival and turned a decent profit which paved the way for Pulp Tarantinos talents have been on display in other films too He has made cameo appearances in Des starring Antonio Bander as and Sleep With starring Eric Stoltz in which he unleashes a discourse on how Top Gun is really about homosexuality His writing talents beefed up the screenplay for the submarine thril ler Crimson and he also wrote the films Natural Born Killers and True His next feature will be Four which highlights four stories directed by four different directors In the meantime you will have to make do with Tarantino films already available Pulp Fiction starring Bruce Willis John Travolta Uma Thur man Samuel L Jackson Christo pher Walken and Quentin Taranti no Directed by Quentin 1994 Miramax Home Video 154 Three stories about one story is how the screenplay describes this film Travolta and Jackson star as a pair of hoods working for a Los Angeles crime lord While escorting his bosss wife Thur man for the evening Travoltas life spins out of control when she suffers a drug overdose Mean while downandout boxer Willis is on the run after refusing to throw a fight Tarantinos film is at once exhilarating and disgusting forc ing audiences to laugh while being repulsed It is as fresh as it is shocking and definitely not for the squeamish Quentin Tarantino Directed by JeanLuc Godard 1987 As unlikely an adaptation of Shakespeares tragedy as you are likely to see Norman Mailer wrote the screenplay for Godard who turns this into a grunge Shake speare Often difficult to follow it is notable more for those who par ticipated as actors including Allen and an undiscovered Tarantino True Romance starring Christian Slater Patricia Ar quette Dennis Hopper Gary Old man Brad Pitt Christopher Wal ken and Samuel L Jackson Directed by Tony Scott 1993 Slater is given a night with hook er Arquette They fall in love and Slater decides to free her from her pimp After killing the pimp the two lovers escape with her belongings except that they have stolen a suitcase of cocaine by mistake Now every lowlife gangster in Los Angeles is chasing them down Like Pulp this film is very violent but has a disarming undercurrent of hilarious dialogue written bv Tarantino WARPED ENCOUNTERS KYJOEGROSS AhHa Chewing your cud in class young man I hope you brought enough for everyone Quentin Tarantino Reservoir Dogs starring Harvey Keitel Tim Roth Michael Madsen Steve Buscemi Lawrence Tierney and Quentin Tarantino Directed by Quentin Tarantino 1992 Live Home Video 99 tells us History does not record what Mar tha Stewart might have thought of his gardening technique Yet if the Father of Our Country were president today this is just the sort of detail readers might be treated to in George the new polit ical magazine that recently hit newsstands Named after one president and cofounded by the son of another John F Kennedy Jr the slick glitzy magazine intends to cover politics the way Architectural Di gest covers home building admir ing the view without risking the splinters George you see is a new kind of political magazine if a maga zine that refuses to take sides can be called political Its founders describe their ap proach as they aim to define politics extrava gantly from elected officials to media moguls to movie stars to ordinary It is a magazine more about per sonality than public policy a sort of Tiger Beat for the scene with a top exec whom People once deemed the sexiest man But while most political journals have about as many readers as Jesse Helms has friends at the NEA Kennedys presence has been enough to entice millionplus in support from the magazine con glomerate Hachette Filipacchi to trigger a cascade of media atten tion to land Cindy Crawford as cover girl and Madonna as color commentator The question is can a famous name and a fashionheavy attitude carry George when the hype dies down I dont think it will find an audi photo by Copley Service First edition cover of George says Lewis Lapham editor of Harpers the magazine of cul ture and politics that was founded in 1850 It depends on how long the backers will be willing to put in the Lapham has little good to say about George He calls it a maga zine that presents as its chief vir tue the fact that it is and a sign that the political dis course has been reduced to some thing that can be sold at Blooming In his editors note for theNo vember issue of Harpers Lapham lambasts George as catering to sophisticated consumers certain to bring to their reading of the Bill of Rights or a speech by Bob Dole the same standards of judgment discriminating and taste exqui site that they bring to their appre ciation of an Armani suit a pair of Ferragamo shoes or a Louis Vuit ton For George the task of finding fresh material issue after issue stories that will lure not just celeb rity hounds but more importantly serious followers of politics could prove as daunting as Washingtons crossing of the Dela ware SHANNEN DOHERTY Born April 21 1971 in Memphis Tenn Appeared On TVs Little House on the Prairie and Our Films Night Girls Just Want to Have Became however would have been as accurate Director Richard Donner has taken the chestnut Mr De Mille Im ready for my closeup now to heart He struggles to fill every square centimeter of the screen with the solo faces of Sylvester Stallone Antonio Banderas and Ju lianne Moore Two out of three as the saying goes aint bad Still nobody looks his or her best with a 10foot nose Stallone plays Robert Rath a hired killer partial to ties cardi gans and Vnecks He only offs bad guys not actually exactly like his character in The Special Anyway hes the worlds No 1 hit man picking up his assign ments from a mysterious some body available only via email Hes suffering from serious burnout when another assassin the bonkers Miguel Bain Antonio Ban starts to pick Raths pocket That is he dispatches Raths marks before Rath can so much as squeeze off a round of his own The story is a retold western as old as the Hollywood Hills Rath the aging gunslinger has a code never kill innocents and wants to retire Bain the wild young buck shoots anyone who gets in his way and wants to kill Rath in order to take his place as numero uno The setup for the final twist is even lifted from one of Clint Eastwoods Fistful of Dollars flicks Raths final mark the one that will netfhim mil and allow him to back away in comfort is a com puter and coding wizard Julianne Moore known only as Bain is in on the hunt Rath hooks up with Electra The not ter ribly imaginative chase is on Donner Maver ick and all three Lethal Weapon films carries his closeup fixation through most of the action se quences threatening to muddle them hopelessly Still he remains an extraordinary action director and somehow pulls the scenes off thrillingly Hes helped out by terrific set pieces the two assassins at an im passe in a taxi the two assassins no longer at an impasse in a taxi a Shootout in a cluttered apartment silencers afwpppin away Not even Donner though can inject tension into yet another ses GIFT BOOKS AVAILABLE WALNUT 6 most of his time in shadow doing closeup brood ing Since he has a pretty gloomy face anyway Assassins doesnt ask much of him and he fulfills his modest duties reasonably well Now and then the script does deliver some good lines most of them to Banderas whose volatile Bain rivals Benicio Del Toros Fenster in The Usual in enthusiasm for his work if not in unintelligibility Banderas must have sensed this was all a lot of foolishness and felt free to have Bain peek then what the hell vault over the top His frenzied zeal adds juice to and when he takes it too far well its not as if hes ruining it As for Julianne Moore Her Electra is smart funny edgy quirky and appealing not to meih tion deserving of better than Rath Theres not a hint of sex Rath and Electra are downright chaste and the
