The annual giant book sale follows Oct. 5 and 6. Romance lovers take note: There will be the largest collection of Harlequin books ever at a Friends of the Library sale. At five cents each, you can buy a bushel. Regular paperbacks are 50j cents each or three for $1. Don’t forget the ‘fill a bag for $2’ deal at 4 p.m. Friday. Detergent for sale This fall, Canyon Middle School will hold an all-school fund-raiser to benefit: Nation Jr. Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Band, Choir, Cheerleaders, Canyon Middle PTA, Sixth Grade Field Trip and Young Astronauts Club. These students will be selling 20-pound buckets of Proctor and Gamble laundry detergent at $16 per bucket. Order by calling Allyson Farrimond at 651-6525 or Liz Mooney at 629-2334. Save your cans The Humane Society of New Braunfels asks all residents to save their aluminum cans for the Paws to Recycle national aluminum can recycling program for animal shelters. The local chapter wants you to start saving your cans now, so it has a better chance of winning. The grand prize is $3,000 for the shelter that raises the most cans. The collection drive runs from Sept. I to Oct. 31. Women’s seminar The first of a four week series of topics for women will be held Oct. 5 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Laurel We’re Meeting Comal County Young Farmers meeting will be Wednesday, Oct. 4 at the Albert Kypfer Lodge. Bring wife, kids, dogs, etc. Food will be furnished. Bring dessert. Dr. Jerry Richardson will talk on “How To Be Healthier Than Your Farm Animals." 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., happy hour and food. RSVP to 629-1000. American Legion Comal Post #179 meets Thursday, Oct. 5 at 410 W. Coll St. The executive committee meets at 7 p.m., and the regular meeting begins at 8 p.m. Unit 179 Auxiliary meets at 7:30 p.m. The Comal Garden Club meets Thursday, Oct. 5 at 9:15 a.m. at the home of Judy David at 1140 River-crest. Co-hostesses will be Genny Hensz, Jan Kennady and Ruthana Ball. The Men's Garden Club will meet Thursday, Oct. 5 at 7:30 p.m. in the Comal County Extension Service Office at 132 S. Water Lane. The program wit be a panel discussion entitled Tricks of the Trade’ and will feature several club members. The Spring Branch Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual meeting Thursday, Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. This meeting will be at Fire Station #1, which is located at U.S. 281 and FM 311. Election of three board members is one of the items on the agenda. There will be refreshments. Members of the Hermann Sons .Albert Kypfer Lodge #106 are reminded of the meeting and social Friday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. Lodge will furnish stew, members bring a covered dish.
